Content Accuracy – Google’s New Update

I was a little hesitant to write about Google’s plan to come out with a content accuracy update because it’s just a small buzz. However, I think because we are bloggers, the main factor of the update, which is “accuracy”, is very important either way. For example, we should be writing accurate content no matter what and shouldn’t wait until Google decides to press down on us. This applies to all the other updates that have happened with Google like removing SPAM link building, keeping content fresh, mobile-friendly websites, etc. Even with these, I’ve always believed that you should have made sure you were following the fundamentals even before Google announced they were going to make them.



Today is about the slight buzz going on about the accuracy update and what this means for all of us. I’ll try to keep this topic right to the point so we can understand the depth of it.


What is It?


The idea is pretty simple:


Google will try to figure out how trustworthy or accurate your content is by comparing it to other well-known sources already online. The content they compare yours to will either be from Google’s own collection or well-known publishers with a proven track record. For example, if I’m writing on “Weight Loss Diets”, then Google will try to find out how accurate my content is by comparing it to literature by top nutritionists or professors in the industry.


This slight change will ensure people are always getting the MOST up to date information that is trustworthy and accurate at the same time. It’s a great way for Google to protect their reputation for ONLY providing the best and MOST reliable content to their users. For searchers, this tweak is ensuring they get the best possible user experience.


I’d like to discuss some top tips to implement into your content strategy to ensure your content is as accurate as possible.

Research and Verify


One of the best ways to ensure you are providing the best information is to research your topic. Afterward, it’s important to cross-reference your research against reliable sources to make sure you are as accurate as possible. I know I’ve made mistakes when researching, but what’s protected me from publishing inaccurate information is cross-referencing my content with high authority literature.

Give Credit and Show Proof


If I’m getting my information from an online book or another website, then I’ll always add it as a reference point. This is especially important when you’re writing about statistics or data to prove your point. By adding a link to the original resource, you are letting your readers research on their own that your content connects well with the original source. This is also a great way to build trust with your readers and soon, they will stop cross-checking the information because they will stop questioning the accuracy of your content.


Have Someone Check Content


If you’re just starting out, or are unsure about the accuracy of your content, then have someone skim through it before you publish. This is especially important when you are writing about sensitive topics that include data driven elements like statistics and charts. Usually, when I’ve written about topic with these elements, I’ll have a professional in the industry take a quick look before I submit or publish my content. If Google’s new update will be able to track the accuracy of numbers, then having the right data is very important.


You can also copy and paste the data or make a screen shot, but ALWAYS REFERENCE THE ORIGINAL SOURCE.


Hire Someone


This is often the case when you simply don’t have the knowledge or time to put something together with depth. Depending on your budget, you can hire someone with experience in the industry then publish the content on your blog. However, make sure when you hire someone that you’ll own exclusive right to the content. This will protect any legal issues later on over ownership and protect you just in case your content gets republished somewhere else. As an exclusive owner, no one can republish without your consent…it’s that simple.


The decision you make to hire someone will be tough at first because you have to find the right person for the job. Next, you’ll want to make sure the budget is perfect so you can affordable to keep them on your payroll.
