Drinking in adolescence associated with brain changes

Heavy drinking during adolescence may lead to structural changes in the brain and memory deficits that persist into adulthood, according to an animal study published October 29 in The Journal of Neuroscience. The study found that, even as adults, rats given daily access to alcohol during adolescence had reduced levels of myelin — the fatty coating on nerve fibers that accelerates the transmission of electrical signals between neurons. These changes were observed in a brain region important in reasoning and decision-making. Animals that were the heaviest drinkers also performed worse on a memory test later in adulthood. The findings suggest that high doses of alcohol during adolescence may continue to affect the brain even after drinking stops. Further research is required to determine the applicability of these findings to humans....

Shekau denies ceasefire, says Chibok girls have converted to Islam, married off

Boko Haram denied that they had agreed to a ceasefire in a new video obtained on Friday by AFP, describing the Nigerian government claims as a lie and apparently ruling out future talks.

The group’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, also claimed the 219 schoolgirls kidnapped from the remote northeast town of Chibok, in Borno state, in April had converted to Islam and been married off.Chibok-details

In addition, Shekau said the Islamists were holding a German national, who was kidnapped in Adamawa state, also northeast Nigeria, in July.

The video comes after a surprise Nigerian military and presidency announcement on October 17 that a deal had been reached with the militants to end hostilities.

A senior presidential aide to Goodluck Jonathan also said agreement had been reached to free the schoolgirls, whose abduction sparked global anger and demands for their release.

There was immediate scepticism about both claims because of previous assertions of ceasefires and the identity of the purported Boko Haram envoy at the supposed talks, Danladi Ahmadu.

Violence — and fresh kidnappings — have continued unabated since the announcement, including a triple bombing of a bus station in the northern city of Gombe on Friday that killed at least eight.

Nigeria’s government maintains that talks were ongoing in the Chadian capital, Ndjamena.

But Shekau, speaking in Hausa, dressed in military fatigues and boots with a black turban, and flanked by 15 armed fighters, said: “We have not made ceasefire with anyone…

“We did not negotiate with anyone… It’s a lie. It’s a lie. We will not negotiate. What is our business with negotiation? Allah said we should not.”

He also said he did not know Danladi.

– Kidnapped girls –

There was no indication of when or where the video was shot but it was obtained through the same channels as previous communications from the group.

In it, Shekau mentions the Chibok girls for the first time since a video obtained on May 5, when more than 100 were shown in a rural location dressed in the hijab and reciting verses from the Koran.

Then, the militant leader said many of the girls had converted to Islam but in the latest, he indicated that all of those held had become Muslims.

“Don’t you know the over 200 Chibok schoolgirls have converted to Islam? They have now memorised two chapters of the Koran,” he said.

Shekau previously threatened to sell the girls as slave brides and also suggested that he would be prepared to release them in exchange for Boko Haram prisoners.

In the latest message, he said while laughing: “We have married them off. They are in their marital homes.”

Human Rights Watch said in a report published this week that Boko Haram was holding upwards of 500 women and young girls and that forced marriage was commonplace in the militant camps.

One former hostage said she saw some of the Chibok girls forced to cook and clean for other women and girls who had been chosen for “special treatment because of their beauty”

Gov. Amaechi reacts to presidential statement, comes for Reuben Abati

Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers state has reacted to yesterday's statement from the presidency where he was advised to stop political rascality and blackmail. Speaking through the state's Commissioner for Information, Ibim Semenitari, Governor Amaechi said there was never a time he discussed First lady, Dame Patience Jonathan. He also described Presidential Spokesman, Reuben Abati as the rascality within the Presidency

"I would want to say that the Presidential Spokesman should be careful for the kind of threats he issues to an elected Governor. He should remember that the President is not a prefect of the governor. He was elected as President just as the Governor was elected as a governor, and Nigeria is a federation. And please, Abati should know his limits and need not attempt to cross his boundaries.

"It is a bit strange to hear the kind of comments coming out of the Presidency and this shows that the statement was already prepared before governor Amaechi spoke. At no point in his speech did Governor Amaechi make any references. His wife was not even discussed because she is not an official of government. I do not understand where or how Mr. Abati got his story, so we just take it that this is one of those clear indications of rascality within the Presidency trying to call a dog a bad name and hang it”.

Father allegedly bites and beats infant son to death - and blames it on a dog

38 year old Emery James Jenkins (pictured above) has been arrested after he allegedly bit and beat his own son to death...because he wouldn't stop crying...and blamed it on a neighbour's dog.

From NY Daily News

A Minnesota man who allegedly bit and beat his infant son to death two weeks ago because he apparently wouldn’t stop crying blamed the attack on the neighbor’s dog but police aren’t buying it and he is now being charged with second degree murder.

Emery James Jenkins, 38, of Deer River told police that he had accidentally dropped his 3-month-old son on his head while in the bathtub and that the neighbor’s dog had attacked the boy while he was in a car seat wearing a monkey suit, according to CBS Minnesota.

The medical examiner’s office, however, tells a different story.

They said in the report that the baby suffered a skull fracture, blunt force trauma to the body, and cutting or biting injuries to the chest, hands, fingers, feet and toes.

The boy’s mother claims that Jenkins made up the story before eventually calling 911.

Jenkins, who has reportedly received numerous assault charges in the past including a felony domestic assault conviction in 2010 apparently didn’t want to bring his son to the doctor because the blood had soaked through the baby’s clothes. The child died in the hospital two days later and police recovered baby clothes and pillow cases with dried blood stains, according to the report.

Ex-girlfriends of Jenkins who were cited in the criminal complaint in the report said that he has a history of violence and drug use including methamphetamine. In one instance described by a girlfriend in the complaint, Jenkins allegedly slammed a different son’s head into a car door. He had also reportedly made verbal threats about hurting children.

If convicted, Jenkins faces up to 40 years in prison.

BENEFITS OF COCONUT OIL

The application of coconut oil is a natural way to kill multiple viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites. Coconut oil improves digestion, boosts the liver metabolism, and reduces inflammations. When applied topically, it contributes to a healthier skin and speeds up the healing of wounds.

Coconut oil is effective in the treatment of diabetes, as it has proven to increase the “good” HDL cholesterol in women and improve the LDL:HDL ratio, which contributes to a healthier weight loss process and abdominal fat reduction. Scientists came to this conclusion when they compared it to soybean oil.

Today, coconut oil is used in the cholesterol treatments for patients diagnosed with chronic heart disease. It is also beneficial in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, and in the regulation of blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

Have in mind that these findings do not necessarily mean that coconut is the cure for cancer. It is just one of the many natural ways to fight diseases.
