A Business Lens For Learning And Development

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are a vital component of the South African economy. However, there is a substantial portion of the country’s estimated 650,000 SMEs that have no access to funding to assist in their continued growth

In response to an increase in demand for reliable and easily accessible capital for businesses like these, XPRS Capital Africa opened its doors in South Africa. The specialist business funding provider is geared towards rapidly vetting and approving short-term business funding ranging from R50,000 to R500,000. In addition, XPRS Capital Africa specialises in extending funding to SMEs that may not qualify for funding from traditional lenders.

Simon Leps, CEO of XPRS Capital Africa explains that XPRS Capital has its roots in the US, having been founded in 2013. “The company is a renowned and established alternative online business-to-business lender. Together with a team of data scientists and using thousands of data points, XPRS Capital has developed a proprietary credit vetting algorithm and packaged product set.”

Related: Angels & Demons: What To Know When Negotiating Equity Funding For Your Start-up

“The technology and approval processes developed by XPRS Capital has a massively successful track record overseas and the experience that our company has gained over the years will help many more SMEs in South Africa to reach their potential,” says Leps.

“The XPRS Capital platform has processed over $1b worth of loans and has a proven track record of funding thousands of businesses across hundreds of industries,” he continues.

Leps adds that the company’s sophisticated algorithm allows XPRS Capital Africa to provide funding to many South African SMEs that are usually denied loans on the basis that their owners have less than ideal credit records. “Traditional lenders are often reluctant to lend capital to SME owners whose credit histories place them in higher risk categories. This has created a massive challenge for many promising SMEs. At XPRS Capital Africa, we focus on the health of the SME, and use state-of-the-art technology to provide businesses the cash flow they need to grow and flourish.”

Using the unique algorithm that we have optimised for the South African market, we are able to accurately assess any SME that has been in business for over a year, to rapidly provide a 3 to 12-month funding solution, notes Leps. “The online application takes less than 10 minutes, allowing SME owners to spend less time filling in forms for funding, and more time on their business.”

XPRS Capital Africa provides funding directly, working closely with SMEs to offer the fastest approvals, best possible repayment terms and most accurate risk profiles for any business.

“Cash flow is the lifeblood of every single business. Our mission is to provide this quickly, affordably and reliably,” Leps adds.

He notes that, given the high number of businesses that have trouble accessing financing, SME owners should also know how to maintain their own positive credit records. Thereby they can ensure that their businesses have access to as many options as possible.

“Ensure that all areas of your company are looked after to the same degree as most funding providers want to see that all aspects of a business are well managed. Up to date, audited financial statements and management accounts, well managed bank accounts, and good budgeting and forecasting show that the owners are attentive. Owners also need to know their businesses inside and out and be able to answer questions about their cash flow and deal pipeline.”

Related: The Investor Sourcing Guide

In addition to this, Leps says that the customer’s experience when dealing with the business could also have a measurable impact. “Any touchpoints that are available to your customers will be looked at by potential funders, so all customer facing assets should look professional and be kept up to date. This goes for websites, online portals and social media accounts.”

“The ability to access additional funds when your company needs it is the key to long-term survival. That’s why it is paramount to maintain the best possible credit record. However, it is also important to remember that, whatever the financial state of your business, business owners are never completely out of options,” Leps concludes.

Ron Howard Creates a Great Bit of Marketing by Combining 'Stars Wars' and 'Arrested Development'

That's not a banana stand.

Sure, Ron Howard is a great filmmaker (A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13). But what we really appreciate him for is his hilarious narration on one of the best sitcoms ever, Arrested Development.

So it makes sense that the director of the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story created a video summarizing Star Wars in the style of Arrested Development, which is not only hilarious but an excellent plug for his new movie.

How You Can Do Big Things

https://www.entrepreneurmag.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/seven-step-formula.jpg [ad_1]

Goal orientation is a way of thinking practiced by optimists and all successful people. In future orientation, you first develop a clear, ideal picture of what you want to accomplish sometime in the future. With goal orientation, you crystallise that image into specific, measurable, detailed goals and objectives you’ll need to accomplish to achieve that ideal future vision.

Successful people develop the habits of personal strategic planning. They sit down and make a list of exactly what they want to accomplish in the short, medium, and long term. They then use a powerful, seven-part goal-setting methodology to create blueprints and plans of action that they follow every day.

Once you develop the habit of setting goals and making plans to accomplish them, it will become as natural for you as breathing. By following a proven goal-setting process, you’ll increase the likelihood of achieving your goals by as much as ten times, by 1 000% or more. This isn’t just a theory; it has been proved and demonstrated repeatedly by almost every person who practices it.

In February 2003, USA Today reported on a study of people who had set New Year’s resolutions the year before. They found that only 4% of the people who had made New Year’s resolutions, but had not put them in writing, had followed through on them. But 46% of those people who had written down their New Year’s resolutions carried them out. This is a difference in success rates of more than 1 100%!

The seven-step formula

seven-step formula

Many formulas and recipes exist for goal-setting. As a rule, ‘any plan is better than no plan at all.’ Here is one of the best and most effective goal-setting plans or formulas you will ever learn.

Step one

Decide exactly what you want in a certain area, and write it down clearly, in detail. Make the goal measurable and specific.

Step two

Set a deadline for achieving the goal. If it’s a large goal, break it down into smaller parts and set sub-deadlines.

Step three

Make a list of everything you’ll have to do to achieve this goal. As you think of new items, add them to your list until it’s complete.

Step four

Organise your list of action steps into a plan. A plan is a list of activities organised on the basis of two elements: Priority and sequence.

In organising by priorities, you determine the most important things you can possibly do on your list to achieve your goal. The 80/20 rule applies: 20% of the things you do will account for 80% of your results. If you don’t set clear priorities, you’ll ‘major in minors’ and spend much of your time on small and irrelevant tasks that don’t help you achieve your goal.

In organising by sequence, you determine what must be done before something else can be done. You create a checklist. There are always activities that are dependent upon other activities being completed in advance. What are they, and what is the logical order or sequence of completion?

Step five

Identify the obstacles or limitations that might hold you back from achieving your goal, both in the situation and within yourself. Ask yourself, “Why have I not achieved this goal already?”

Identify the most important constraint or limitation that’s holding you back, and then focus on removing that limiting factor. It could be a certain amount of money or a key resource. It could be an additional skill or habit you need. It could be additional information you require. It could be the assistance of one or more people. Whatever it is, identify it clearly and go to work to eliminate it.

Step six

Once you’ve determined your goal, developed your plan, and identified your major obstacle, immediately take action of some kind toward achieving your goal. Step out in faith. Do the first thing that comes to mind. But do something to start moving toward your most important goal.

Step seven

Do at least one thing every day that moves you toward your most important goal. Make a habit of getting up each morning, planning your day and then doing something, anything, that moves you at least one step closer to what’s most important to you.

The habit of doing something every single day that moves you toward an important goal develops within you the power of momentum. Daily action deepens your belief that the goal is achievable and activates the law of attraction. As a result, you begin moving faster and faster toward your goal, and your goal begins moving faster and faster toward you.

Now that you have the formula, here’s how you achieve your goals.

achieving-goals

Step One

Don’t let life and ‘busyness’ derail you

Accomplishing a goal can be hard work. But even if a project is something you are passionate about and want to complete, distractions such as social media, doubts and other tasks can make it nearly impossible to concentrate on it. Don’t fret. We’re here to help.

Check out these eight steps to help you prioritise and clear your mind.

1. Stop multitasking

Instead of trying to do a million things at once, take a step back and tackle one task at a time. And while your inclination might be to start your day with busy work — like checking emails — and then move on to the harder things, you should first try to get your brain moving by challenging yourself with a bigger, more creative endeavour.

2. Block out your days

A good way to hold yourself accountable when it comes to quieting the noise all around you is to specifically block out time in your day — maybe it’s 30 minutes or an hour — to spend on a given project. Colour code your calendar or set a timer to make sure you are accomplishing the goal at hand.

3. Get your blood pumping

You can’t focus if you’re stuck inside and staring at a screen all day long. Turn off your computer and phone, and go for a walk for 20 minutes. The fresh air and the movement will clear your head. Also make sure that you are drinking enough water and getting enough rest.

4. Help your technology help you

A platform like RescueTime, a software that runs while you work and shows you how you are spending your day, could help you understand why something is taking longer to complete than it should. Options like Cold Turkey, Freedom and Self Control block out the Internet entirely to keep you off your Twitter feed when you should be meeting deadlines.

5. Meditate

Get a recommendation for a yoga or meditation class, or even make it an office outing so everyone can get some time to quiet their minds. Or look online for a plethora of apps and platforms whose stock and trade is mindfulness, like Meditation Made Simple, Calm and Headspace. For slightly more of a monetary investment, you could look into wearable tech like Thync, a device that produces electrical pulses to help your brain decrease stress.

6. Change up what’s in your headphones

While background noise might help block out a loud office or construction outside your window, you need to be careful that what you are listening to isn’t distracting you more. Music with lyrics can sap your focus from the task in front of you, so consider trying classical or electronic music instead. Or use a playlist that is familiar to you, so you aren’t tempted to turn all your attention to the new sound.

7. Streamline your communication

If you find that all of your focus gets trained on getting your inbox down to zero, think about how you can get yourself out from under a relentless deluge of email. Ask yourself and your colleagues to think about whether this conversation would be most effective through email, on the phone or in person. Taking five minutes to walk over to someone else’s workspace will save you the time and energy invested into a redundant email chain and clarify how you want to attack a problem more quickly.

8. Find an environment with the right kind of noise

To be most effective, you need to strike a delicate balance between too much noise and total silence. According to David Burkus, an associate professor of leadership and innovation at Oral Roberts University, “some level of office banter in the background might actually benefit our ability to do creative tasks, provided we don’t get drawn into the conversation,” Burkus wrote in the Harvard Business Review. “Instead of total silence, the ideal work environment for creative work has a little bit of background noise. That’s why you might focus really well in a noisy coffee shop, but barely be able to concentrate in a noisy office.”

time-management

Step two

Become a master of time

If you’re serious about achieving your goals, not only do you need to set those goals the right way, but you also have to get serious about avoiding distractions and becoming too immersed in the bad habits that you know you need to quit. Time-wasters need to fall by the wayside, and serious grit-and-bear-it hard work needs to take its place.

One of the most effective skills you can have in life is powerful and effective time management. If you’re not managing your time well, there’s no way you’re going to reach your goals at work and the life outside of it. Sure, you might make some progress. But your time management will be an uphill battle if you don’t take your time seriously. People who squander and waste the precious little time they do have, know all too well how difficult achieving even mildly difficult goals can be.

The truth is that time is the greatest equaliser in life. No matter who you are, your age, income, gender, race or religion, you have the same amount of time as the next person. Whether you’re filthy rich or dirt poor, your time is the same. It’s not about how much time you have. It’s about how effectively you manage your time.

The trick? Find a good time management system and work it. There are many. It’s entirely up to you which one to choose. But if you don’t want to become part of the 92% statistic of people who fail to achieve their long-term goals, then you need to pay attention to how you use the precious little time you do have in this world.

What are the best tips for managing your time?

  1. Set goals the right way. There’s a right and wrong way to set goals. If you don’t set your goals the right way, then you’ll lack the proper targets, which will force you to fall off track. But when you set them the right way, the sky is the limit.

  2. Find a good time management system. One of the tips for managing your time is to find the right system to actually do it. The quadrant time-management system is probably the most effective. It splits your activities into four quadrants based on urgency and importance. Things are either urgent or important, both, or neither. Neither (quadrant 4) are the activities that you want to stay away from, but it’s the not-urgent-but-important quadrant (2) that you want to focus on.

  3. Audit your time for seven days straight. Spend seven days straight assessing how you spend the time you do have right now. What are you doing? Record it in a journal or on your phone. Split this up into blocks of 30 minutes or an hour. What did you get done? Was it time wasted? Was it well spent? If you use the quadrant system, circle or log the quadrant that the activity was associated with. At the end of the seven days, tally up all the numbers. Where did you spend the most time? Which quadrants? The results might shock you.

  4. Spend your mornings on MITs. Mark Twain once said, “If it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning. And If it’s your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.” His point? Tackle your biggest tasks in the morning. These are your most important tasks (MITs) of the day. Accomplishing those will give you the biggest momentum to help you sail through the rest of the day.

  5. Instil keystone habits into your life. Charles Duhig poignantly coined the keystone habit in his book entitled, The Power of Habit. In architecture, the keystone is the stone that holds all other stones in place. Similarly, keystone habits help to not only solicit other good habits, but also help to eliminate bad habits. Focus on keystone habits and you’ll get much better at managing your overall time by making your habit development much easier.

  6. Schedule email response times. Turn off your email throughout the day. When your email is pouring in, it’s easy to get distracted. Schedule time to read and respond to emails. If there’s something urgent, someone will call or text you. But when you have your email open, those distractions interrupt your thought flow and it’s harder to get back on track.

  7. Eliminate bad habits. One of the biggest time-wasters we have are our bad habits. Whether it’s Netflix binge-watching, excessively surfing social media, playing games, going out frequently to drink with friends, or so on, those bad habits take away the precious little time that we do have. Use your time wisely by eliminating your bad habits if you’re serious about achieving big goals in life.

  8. Take frequent breaks when working. One study suggests that you should work for 52 minutes and break for 17. You might not have the luxury to do that. But you should take frequent breaks. If you’re an entrepreneur working for yourself, this is crucial. It’s easy to run on fumes and not even know it. Keep your mental, emotional and physical states at peak levels by breaking frequently.

  9. Make to-do lists in the evening for the next day. Every single evening before bed, make a list for the next day. Look at your goals and see what you can do to help move you closer. This doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time. But by making to-do lists, you’re effectively setting goals for the day. Daily goals are easier to achieve while helping to move us towards the longer and bigger goals. But that happens by creating to-do lists.

  10. Declutter and organise. Studies have determined that clutter in our environment causes us to lose focus. When we lose focus, we lose time. If you want to avoid that, declutter and organise. Don’t do it all at once. Start small. One drawer today. A shelf tomorrow. Maybe a closet the next day. Just one per day. You build momentum and eventually find yourself turning into an organising warrior.

momentum

Step three

Keep up your momentum

(AKA Learn to see the bigger picture to keep your eye on the prize)

We all have goals. How to achieve those goals is not as complex as you might think. Sometimes it’s just about taking a step back to see the bigger picture.

Related: 10 Great Quotes On The Power Of Goals

Here are three important lessons to learn about achieving your goals as you take on the day (each and every day).

1. Focus on what you need instead of what you want

You might think you want that big house and three cars, but do you really need it? This is such a simple way to set authentic priorities, yet so few people get it.

A simple ‘want’ is nothing but a fantasy. You need to be passionate to achieve what you want to achieve or it’s never going to happen. It must almost be tinged with desperation.

2. Learn the lessons from all of it, positive and negative

Life is never all good or all bad, so we have to learn from both. When you find yourself basking in all that is positive in your life, think about how you managed to succeed. How can you replicate that same success? On the other hand, you need to be able to grow on the negative. Think about why you failed and how you can avoid doing that again.

Set aside some time every week to reflect on your successes and failures. It’s the only way you’re going to grow to a point where you can achieve your goals. Don’t over-think every project afterwards but if you can take one lesson from each experience you know you’ve done it right.

3. Stay focused on the prize

It’s easy to lose focus when you’re taking on multiple ventures at the same time. To make sure you stay focused on the prize always have a plan for the short-term, medium-term and the long-term.

Question everything you’re doing. Ask yourself: “Is what I am doing right now contributing towards my short-term, medium-term, and long-term goals?” Making sure that you’re studying hard is key here.

If the answer is no then you know you need to rethink what you’re doing. Staying focused on the prize is what will prevent you from wasting your time on the tasks that don’t matter.

The main lesson is to think before and after

Think about what you’re about to do and whether it takes you closer to your goals. Think about what you have done and determine whether you could have done it better or whether things turned out the way you wanted them to.

It can be hard to stop when you’re in the middle of something, but this is the most important part of all. Once you manage to do this you’ll get more results for every action.

CHECKLIST

Your goal-setting (and achieving) checklist

Here’s the simple reality of achieving success. Unless you have goals, you have no way of knowing whether or not you’ve already reached the pinnacle of your life. But all this tends to be a bit easier to suss out if you have those goals in hand. Setting goals is easy — we all do it. Sticking to them is harder.

Here’s how you can stay on track.

Write goals that align with your values

There isn’t a huge difference between corporate goals and life goals. If your career goals aren’t supporting your life goals, you are bound to have a miserable existence.

Set goals that you can control

Too often, we set goals that depend on other people. Unless every aspect of the goal you set is under your control, you have very little likelihood of ever achieving it.

Think big

Set goals that you don’t think you can achieve and work your tail off to get there. Anyone can follow the advice of lesser men and set clearly achievable goals, but that’s for under-achievers and slackers. There is nothing wrong with setting your sights higher than most might believe practicable.

Give yourself time

If you begin with the end in mind, that is to say, if you start by visualising where you want to end up in life, the things you need to get there are pretty easy to plot out.

Plan for success

Don’t worry that your dreams aren’t realistic or that you might not achieve them. Don’t ask ‘What if I fail?’ Instead, ask, ‘What if I succeed?’ Worrying about failure is pointless and destructive; the surest way to be a failure is to spend time worrying about it. Your goals won’t just accomplish themselves; you will have to have a plan, and you’ll have to work that plan.

Manage your risks

You will never achieve goals you didn’t set, but then again there are precious few guarantees in this life. While most of the things you will do on your journey to success will carry some measure of risk, that’s okay. Just be sure that you consider that risk and weigh it against the reward.

Why the Best Storytellers Achieve the Most Brand Awareness

https://assets.entrepreneur.com/images/misc/1524196571_warby.jpg [ad_1]

People aren't interested in logos but they will stop what they are doing to hear a good story.

5 min read

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

In 2013, Google ran a promotional campaign in India using a clever ad. In this commercial, Google tells the story of two friends who’ve been separated as a result of the India-Pakistan partition and then brought back together after six decades, thanks to Google Search.

The beautiful and emotional story being told in this video will easily bring tears to your eyes, even if you don’t understand Hindi. And anyone who has seen it would remember it for the rest of their lives.

Related: How to Tell Stories the Media Won't Ignore

Google isn't the only brand that made people cry using emotional ads. This is actually a psychological hack many brands use to evoke emotions in the audience through the power of storytelling. Which allows brands to be more memorable and build more meaningful connections with the audience.

Here are a few ways you can use this same hack and incorporate storytelling into your own marketing strategy to boost brand awareness and grow your business.

Tell your own brand story.

Every business website has an "About" page. Most businesses fill this page with boring stats and statements when they should be using it to tell their story.

Warby Parker does this well. Instead of taking the common approach, the brand tells the story of how it was founded, why they’re different and describes its mission to make designer eyewear more affordable for everyone. The brand even taps into the audience’s emotions by explaining how it donates a pair of glasses for every pair sold.

This is a brilliant brand story you can learn a lot from. A brand story is not always about showcasing history or timeline of your company. It can be both a mission statement and an engaging story at the same time.

Make an emotional connection.

According to a case study by HBR, making an emotional connection with your audience is much more important than customer satisfaction. In fact, a retailer managed to increase its number of active customers by 15 percent and boost same-store-sales growth by 50 percent by using a customer experience strategy based on emotional connection.

Isn’t that amazing? Customers care more about how emotionally connected you are with them than their own satisfaction.

How do you make an emotional connection with your audience online to increase brand awareness? Well, the best approach to take is to humanize your brand and company. For example, you can let your team publish blog posts in their own perspective while allowing them to share their own personal stories.

You can also show the faces of your team members in live chat systems and show their name so that your customers know there are real human beings behind the brand.

Related: How Compelling Storytelling Can Help You Build a Heritage Brand

Step into your customers' shoes.

A great way to tell a genuine brand story is to first step into your customers’ shoes and understand their daily struggles and the pain points of their lives. Then you can incorporate those pain points into your brand story to show why you’re different and to connect with your audience on a much deeper level.

Your brand story doesn’t always have to be serious or too emotional. You can always take a different approach and add a little humor to your brand story or take a more personal approach, especially if your business involves a personal brand.

Share customer stories.

Getting your customers to share their own stories, also known as brand-driven storytelling, is a powerful approach that can increase your authority and brand awareness at the same time.

A brand story always sounds better when it comes from the customer. This is why people read reviews before buying products or services. It’s the same reason why brand-driven storytelling has been so effective for many companies and businesses.

It gives you a unique chance to build awareness by telling stories from the customer’s point of view. More importantly, it also adds an emotional touch and more authenticity to your story.

Take your audience behind-the-scenes.

Many people think of big brands and businesses as big corporations run by robots and drones. As a small business, you can use this to your advantage. Take your audience behind-the-scenes of your company. Use your blog posts and social media to give tours of your headquarters and share employee success stories.

Brands like Zappos use this strategy well to capture its audience by telling powerful stories about its employees while also empowering them to share their own experiences with the world.

Related: How to Become a Content Strategist and Master Storyteller

In conclusion.

Much like how parents use bedtime stories to connect with their children, you can also use storytelling to connect with your audience and customers, build authority, and get ahead of your competition.

Start by creating a better storytelling strategy. Decide on which approach you’re going to take to make your stories more authentic and which medium you’re going to use. Above all, always be truthful and be human.

How to Increase Sales by Encouraging Mobile Spending

https://www.quicksprout.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/image5-9.png [ad_1]

It’s a common misconception that you need to always focus on customer acquisition to drive sales and increase profits.

I hear this all of the time when I’m consulting with business owners. There are lots of other ways that you can generate more sales.

Sometimes all you need to do is make subtle changes to your existing process. That way you can improve the experience of your current customers and get them to spend more money.

You should set goals that help you increase the average purchase order and buying frequency.

One of the best ways to do this is by encouraging mobile spending.

Mobile trends are on the rise. In fact, over the past six months, 62% of consumers with a smartphone have completed an online purchase from their mobile device.

In 2017, mobile commerce held a 34.5% share of total ecommerce sales in the United States. At this growth rate, experts predict this number to rise to 54% by the year 2021.

This shouldn’t come as a major surprise to you. That’s because everyone seemingly has a mobile device glued to their hands at all times.

Smartphones. Tablets. That’s where people are browsing and consuming. You’ve got to recognize these trends and accommodate the needs of mobile users.

Here’s the bottom line. If you can encourage customers to buy from their mobile devices, you’ll be able to make more money. I’ll explain everything you need to know in order to make this happen.

Optimize your website for mobile devices

The first step in the process is making sure that your web design is optimized for mobile users.

Take a look at how users react to mobile-friendly sites.

image5 9

People visiting your website are 67% more likely to buy your products or services if it is mobile optimized. But 61% of users will abandon your page if the design isn’t mobile-friendly.

Furthermore, 74% of users say that they are more likely to return to websites that are mobile-friendly.

Here’s why. Take a moment to think about the current layout of your desktop site. There are certain elements that need to be changed in order to fit properly on a small screen.

Now users won’t have to struggle to read small text. There’s no need for them to zoom in, side scroll, or do anything else that would impair their experience and limit their consumption.

It’s important for you to prioritize your mobile optimized website. This needs to happen before you start campaigns that drive more traffic to your mobile site.

Based on what we just discussed, it can have an adverse effect on the consumer opinion if they visit a site that’s not optimized for their device. Otherwise, you’re going to have high bounce rates and people leaving your site because navigation is too difficult.

So it’s safe to say that this should be your biggest priority right now if you haven’t already completed this step.

Here is a basic template example to show you what a mobile-friendly design looks like.

image1 9

As you can see, the design on the right is much easier to read, navigate, and comprehend.

You can improve your conversion rates and increase sales by simply implementing this strategy.

Create a mobile app

A mobile-friendly website is great, and it’s 100% necessary based on everything that we have already covered.

But with that said, if you want to take your mobile spending campaigns to the next level you’ve also got to create a mobile application.

Look, I get it. I realize that this isn’t as simple as changing an image on the homepage of your website. Business owners may be on the fence about developing an app because of the time and costs associated with a project of this magnitude.

I’m not going to lie to you. This can be a long and grueling process. It’s not necessarily going to be the least expensive investment you make in your life either.

But the results are worth it. Once you have an app up and running, it can do wonders for your business.

Your mobile app is basically an enhanced version of your mobile site. Every aspect and element of the app will be better than your mobile site. Users will recognize the improved experience and it will ultimately get them to spend more money.

It’s a great idea for all businesses in every industry to build a mobile app.

According to recent studies, experts predict that mobile spending via apps will rise to more than $110 billion by the end of 2018. That’s a 30% spending increase from the previous year.

Numbers this high are just too big to ignore. It’s clear that consumers have a growing comfort level with spending money from mobile apps.

These are the top three reasons why small business owners are building apps for their companies.

image2 8

If you recall, earlier I said that you don’t need to focus on customer acquisition if you want to increase your sales. But with a mobile app, it will be easier for you to get new customers without having to put in too much effort.

As we continue throughout this guide, you’ll see how new customers will automatically be more attracted to your business and willing to spend if you have an app available.

Focus on speed and performance

Whether users are accessing your mobile website or mobile app, there is one thing in common for both of these platforms. It’s got to be fast.

Research shows that ecommerce sites lose of half of their traffic if the page doesn’t load in less than three seconds. 74% of people will abandon a mobile page if it takes five seconds to load.

A slow mobile page loading time is one of the fastest ways to kill your conversion rates. You can’t expect to increase sales if that’s happening.

But on the flip side, high speed results in higher conversions and more sales.

The same concept applies to your mobile app. Take a look at how quickly people expect mobile apps to launch.

image8 3

Remember, you’re trying to get people to spend their hard-earned money.

If you give them an excuse to change their minds, they are going to take it. So if they are sitting on a loading page for a few seconds, it’s easy for them to get frustrated and decide not to complete the checkout process.

But if everything loads instantly, they won’t have a reason or even a chance to change their minds.

Speed and performance both go hand in hand. Sure, your site and app may load quickly, but if they have tons of glitches and crashes, it won’t help your conversion rates.

People value their time too much. If your platforms are giving them problems, they’ll find another site or app to use instead.

This could be detrimental to your brand. 83% of app users say that performance is important to them.

image7 7

Apps that are fast and perform well enhance the user experience. But 48% of people who had a bad experience using an app are less likely to use it again.

34% of consumers who had a poor app experience will go straight to a competitor’s app.

But if you prioritize speed and performance, you won’t have to worry about these problems.

Eliminate unnecessary steps in the checkout process

This piggybacks off of our last point. When someone decides what they want to buy, don’t make them jump through hoops to get it.

Having an efficient checkout process is important for the conversion rates on your desktop site as well. But it’s even more important for mobile devices.

That’s because it’s much harder for people to fill out information on their smartphones or tablets. To buy something, people have to enter their name, address, phone number, credit card information, and more.

It’s obviously easier to do this from a desktop device with a full keyboard than from a 4-inch screen. That’s why it’s important to only ask for the bare minimum.

Do you really need their phone number? Probably not.

So eliminate steps and fields that aren’t absolutely necessary to complete the purchase. Each added step will hurt your conversion rates.

Your mobile app can help improve your checkout process even more than your mobile website. That’s because it’s easy for users to save information to their profile.

Then they won’t have to fill out all of these fields each time that they want to buy something. As long as they are logged into their profile, they should be able to complete the purchase with just a few clicks.

Having a mobile app also makes it easier for you to implement and accept alternative payment options, such as Apple Pay.

Personalization is key

You’ve got to make sure that your ads and marketing campaigns are properly targeting the right people. Getting customers to shop from their mobile devices can make this easier for you.

As I said earlier, it helps speed up the checkout process. But having a customer profile on a mobile app can do so much more than this as well.

Now you’ll be able to recommend items to your customers based on their browsing habits and previous purchase history.

You may be surprised to hear that people are comfortable having their behavior monitored if it improves their shopping experience.

image4 9

Furthermore, 74% of consumers feel frustrated if the content isn’t personalized on websites. 77% of consumers say that they paid more for products and recommended brands to others if that company offers a personalized shopping experience.

It’s simple. Your customers want personalization.

Here’s a simple example to show you what I’m talking about. Let’s say someone purchased a snowboard, boots, a winter hat, and gloves from your app.

Well, the next time they launch the app you can have product recommendations on their homepage for items such as a snowboarding jacket or goggles.

Giving them recommendations for a surfboard or bathing suit probably won’t make too much sense.

You can also personalize suggested items based on things like gender, age, and location. Meaning you shouldn’t promote dresses and skirts to male customers.

Try using location-based services and geofencing technology to target customers based on their location. This can bring your personalization campaigns to a whole new level.

When an app user enters a specific area, they can get a targeted push notification to entice a sale. This could happen when they are within the vicinity of one of your retail stores or for other reasons as well.

Implement a digital loyalty program

Customer loyalty programs are one of my favorite ways to increase sales.

It gives your customers a reason to keep shopping and coming back because they want to benefit from the rewards that you’re offering. There are several ways to approach this.

But no matter which one that you choose, it will increase the likelihood that they’ll make purchases from your brand.

image3 9

One of the most common types of loyalty programs is based on a per visit or per purchase system. Think about how a punch card works at a local deli or pizza shop.

Businesses offer something like a free meal on the customer’s 10th visit, regardless of how much they spend each time they buy something.

Another way to approach this is based on spending tiers. The more a customer spends in a given time frame, such as a year, the better their benefits get.

No matter which option you choose, having a loyalty program built into your mobile app will help skyrocket your sales. That’s because people won’t have to worry about carrying a physical card.

They won’t need an account number to memorize or anything like that either. All they need to do is make purchases through the app and the rest takes care of itself.

It’s easy for them to monitor their purchase history and progress toward their rewards.

Psychologically, this will entice your customers to spend more money and buy more often. They’ll want to do whatever they can to reach the next reward level and enjoy the benefits that come with it.

Promote mobile benefits and offer incentives to spend

So you created a mobile-friendly website and built a mobile app. Now what?

Nobody is going to know about this until you tell them. So you’ve got to use all of your marketing channels to spread the word.

Don’t wait until your app is launched to tell people. Start building hype so the customers are ready for it and are anxiously ready to download as soon as they can.

Then they’ll be able to start spending right away once the app has officially launched. Talk about these benefits on channels like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Send information to subscribers on your email list as well.

54% of emails are opened from mobile devices. So if you’ve got links in your emails, you’ve got to make sure that it drives the recipients to your mobile-friendly website.

All of your emails should have a “download our app” button somewhere within the message. If you don’t promote it, you can’t expect to see results.

You’ll also need to give people an incentive to shop from their mobile devices.

One of the best ways to do this is by offering a discount off of their first purchase from the mobile app. This is a great reason for people to download the app and spend money.

Here is an example of this strategy that was implemented by the Shopbop brand.

image6 9

Another way to increase sales is by creating a customer referral program through your app. Set up one that offers an incentive for the current customer as well as the new customer.

This is basically free promotion. The only cost to you is the discount that you’re offering, which shouldn’t be drastic enough to hurt your profit margins.

Plus, the more people who download your app and use it will increase the chances for other people to discover it when they are browsing the app store.

This increases your brand’s credibility. Ultimately, this will help you get new customers and generate higher sales.

Conclusion

If you want to get more sales, you’ve got to find ways to improve the experience of your existing customers. Recognize their consumption habits and adjust your process accordingly.

Start by designing a website that’s optimized for mobile devices. After that, you can build an app to take the shopping experience to a whole new level.

Prioritize speed and performance. Simplify the checkout process.

Offer a personalized shopping experience for mobile users. Use your app to enhance your customer loyalty program.

Just make sure that you are properly promoting your mobile benefits and give customers incentives to spend.

Follow these tips if you want to generate higher sales from mobile customers.

How is your business encouraging customers to spend more money on your mobile site and app?

Customer-First Marketing: What every entrepreneur and SMB marketer can learn from successful Etsy sellers

https://static.addtoany.com/buttons/favicon.png [ad_1]

Share

Whenever I’m looking for an original, handcrafted gift, I go to Etsy.com. In case you aren’t in the loop yet, it’s a worldwide digital marketplace for artisan entrepreneurs. Recently, I’ve spent a lot of time there because my daughter is getting married, and I need to find some unique gifts for the wedding party.

But it’s also a laboratory of capitalism that any marketers — especially small businesses, entrepreneurs, and startups — can learn from. Smaller companies might not have the giant budgets for media, perfect photography and SEO, but they can find an advantage with more human customer service and customer interactions in general.

I’ve found that each seller has their own communication style and shop policies. Some of these artisans are wildly successful with thousands of sales and loyal customers.

And some, well, not so much.

It’s clear that many of the top-grossing ones stand out because they not only have a great product, but also excellent customer service. No, not even that. Their service is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. They’ve obviously learned a thing or two about customer-first marketing.

Here are just a few of their practices that can help other marketers who are trying to succeed in an already saturated marketplace.

Tip #1: Be personable — No. Be EXTRA personable

This may seem obvious, but for some of us polite but no-nonsense, get-the-job-done people, we need to be reminded to be EXTRA nice. Our kind intentions can easily be misconstrued when we are communicating through the computer instead of in person.

Personally, my favorite sellers on the Etsy marketplace are those who make me feel that I made their day because I chose to order from them. I picked them. And they let me know how happy they are. It’s a small thing, but it’s important. Here are some personal quotes from various shop owners that I have received in the past:

“Thank you so much for shopping with [SELLER NAME] 😊😊😊. I will do my best to make you happy with your order … Thank you again for shopping with [SELLER NAME].”

“Thank you for choosing [SELLER NAME]. It is very meaningful to me.”

“Thanks for ordering from [SELLER NAME]. You made my day!”

“We’re so excited to get started and create a piece that you will fall in love with! All of our items are handmade with an OBSESSION for detail, and we simply do not send out anything that we wouldn’t be proud to wear or to gift ourselves.”

Fitsmallbusiness reached out to an Etsy top ceramic and pottery seller for advice they could give to SMB.

“Buyers want to see your studio, where you work, what your dogs look like, anything that makes a personal connection.” — Greg & Amy Neal, Co-owners of Neal Pottery

Tip #2: Exceed customer expectations

With the digital marketplace being so vast, you can’t always offer a product that is completely new and unique from all others. But when you can’t offer a product that has an “only factor,” you can offer service that does.

In this era of fast food, fast information and fast service, customers expect fast shipping. The owner of DistinctlyIvy (with 176276 sales to date) says on her website:

“As a shopper myself, I want my items quickly. Why should internet shopping be different than shopping at the store? With this in mind, I decided to ship orders out one business day after you order.” — Ivy Presho

According to a Flexe survey:

  • Only 24% of 100 retailer respondents said “free shipping” is their most important delivery offer, although 74% of consumer respondents said it was of utmost importance. Similarly, only 29% of retailers said 1 to 2-day shipping is most important, despite 44% of consumers saying they’d “choose a marketplace because of speed.”

  • Perhaps most glaring was the disconnect between retailers and consumers regarding whether fast shipping is worth it: 75% of the retailer respondents said their customers wouldn’t pay more for faster shipping, but 75% of consumer respondents said they would.

MarketingSherpa also published a similar Walker Sands survey, and 65% of respondents, on average, said one-day shipping would make them more likely to shop online. 80% placed a high value on free shipping.

Careful packaging is a secret weapon that many young startups are using in order to get noticed.

If you want to stand out from your competitors, surprise your customer by including something they are not expecting with their order. This can be a coupon, a sample of another product you offer or careful packaging with a personal touch and a thank you note.

So I found this necklace for the bride at MoodsInGold. It was exquisite and affordable. Perfect for the bride-to-be.

When I opened the parcel, I was wowed by the packaging. This business had clearly gone the extra mile. The necklace was gorgeous, beautifully boxed, and the seller had wrapped it in perfectly folded tissue paper with a cleaning cloth. It exceeded my expectations, and I was delighted. My first thought was, “I will order from this shop again.” Then I recommended it to my friend. A picture can’t really do the tactile experience justice, but to give you a basic idea, here’s a quick photo I snapped.

These people get it. They know that the competition is stiff. They know that if they want to be noticed, they must truly serve their customers and avoid trying to take shortcuts.

Tip #3: More than make up for mistakes

Sometimes it’s better to lose a bit of money to gain a loyal customer.

My soon-to-be-driving, 16-year-old-son wants to buy a car. A few months ago, I suggested he use some of his metal-working skills and open a shop on Etsy.com.  He decided to give it a go and has been making a small but steady profit. He offers a quality product; his messaging is personable, and he goes the extra mile when packaging the product, shipping it out quickly.

Recently, he was thrilled to receive a large order from a new customer. Being a good mom and marketer, I suggested he give the customer a break on the shipping. My son wasn’t too keen on losing that money, but after some persuasion, he agreed. Then a problem arose with the shipping discount code. When the customer put the code in, it didn’t work, and his credit card was charged the full amount. Now he would have to give him a refund for the entire order, and the customer would have to start over and reorder all the items. A big hassle.

Fortunately, the customer was very gracious about the incident. I told my son that he should not only apologize but give the shipping discount and also a generous coupon toward the customer’s next purchase in case he ever decides to buy from the shop again. I explained that it was worth losing some money if it meant gaining a good customer. It was a little painful for my son but a good customer-first marketing lesson.

Occasionally, a customer may leave unfair, negative feedback, and this can be stressful since business owners depend a lot on social recommendations. Our first instinct is to correct the person immediately, and then “politely” add a piece of our mind.

DON’T. Just don’t do it.

Breathe. And think about how to handle this so that those who are reading your comment will perceive you as the shop owner. Because sometimes it’s better to be kind than to be right. Freely give apologies. I’m never impressed with a defensive shop owner. But always amazed at those who are patient and kind while being attacked by merciless reviewers.

Persuasive UX and 5 Emotional Triggers That Convert

https://upcity.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/ux.jpg [ad_1]

Successful site design is crucial to your e-commerce business. In fact, you’d be nowhere without it. You depend on your site to attract, engage and convert customers. That’s a lot of responsibility placed on your web pages and understanding how UX plays into the equation is key.

But, with everything you’ve probably heard about UX design, one thing that often gets overlooked is the emotional appeal of your site. The emotional reaction that a consumer has from your site influences how much they’re willing to engage with your brand.

E-commerce businesses can tap into the emotional triggers of persuasive UX design by including certain elements on their web pages. Here are five of the best ways to boost the power of emotional triggers on your site.

Simplified Decision-Making Process

Everyone feels empowered by choices. Having choices and making decisions provides a sense of satisfaction and being in control of your outcomes. But, what happens when someone is presented with too many choices?

There’s a story about a marketing study that illustrates what happens when consumers have too many choices. In this study about jams, a retailer tested what happened when they offered 6 samples versus 24. What they found out was that while more people stopped to have a taste when more samples were offered, the reduced selection of 6 samples resulted in significantly more sales.

There’s an emotionally overwhelming aspect to having too many choices. It’s quite possible that too many choices on your site is the exact reason why your bounce rate is higher than you want it to be.

Simplified Decision-Making Process

Source

Simplifying choices in your design will make your site more emotionally appealing to visitors. Choose minimalist designs instead of overcrowding elements and adjust product filters so that searches result in a limited number of options based on distinct criteria rather than pages and pages of generic results.

Social Proof

What other people think about your business is important to today’s consumer. An overwhelming 92 percent of consumers read online reviews. This is up from 88 percent just 4 years ago. Social proof of your integrity as an e-commerce business is vital for people to feel comfortable purchasing from you.

Social Proof

Source

There are multiple ways to incorporate social proof into UX design, reviews being only one of them. Testimonials, subscriber counts, organization memberships, social shares, and validation bars that feature other brands that support your business are all ways to instill a sense of trust with your customers through website design.

Give and Take

When a customer makes a purchase from your e-commerce site, it’s obvious what they’re getting. They’ve agreed to pay you a set amount of money for a product of service. It’s pretty straightforward and should be a done deal.

Except that it isn’t.

Sure, there’s an exchange of value. However, from the customer’s perspective, they could have chosen another business, but they chose you. That should be worth more to you than just the exchange of purchase.

An emotional trigger that e-commerce businesses should be aware of is the “you’ve done something for us, now let us do something for you”. It’s a give and take in which you provide something a little extra to your customers because you value and appreciate them. It’s a nice thank you, and we all respond more favorably when we’re appreciated.

Consider giving customers something for free, like an e-book or guide, free shipping, or even a cart completion discount. Small tokens of appreciation will win them over and that means more conversions.

Scarcity and the Fear of Missing Out

In a digital world, where we pretty much have anything we want at our fingertips, scarcity is something that isn’t encountered the same way that it once was. Just think about it from an e-commerce standpoint. A couple decades ago, if a store was out of a hot item you needed to wait for to be reordered. If you didn’t get there bright and early, you often missed out.

But, today, it’s a different story.

We can instantly purchase anything we want just by scrolling and clicking, in the middle of the night if that’s what works best for us. Scarcity just isn’t something that we’re accustomed to, and the idea that we might miss out on something is almost unbearable.

Scarcity and the Fear of Missing Out

Source

Including elements of scarcity and missing out is a huge emotional trigger for persuasive UX design. Think in terms of limited time offers, last chances, or indicating the limited number of items you have in stock.

Visual Power

Content and how you use it has a strong effect on how a customer feels emotionally about your brand. Customers want content that’s useful, engaging, and easy to consume. In general, we’re visual creatures and so it’s important to consider the emotional value of visual appeal in your UX design.

For persuasive UX design, graphics and visual elements such as video, win. They’re more enjoyable than text, and make the customer feel less burdened by not forcing them into reading endless text to find what they’re looking for.

cb2

CB2 uses several emotional triggers in their site design including a seasonal discount. The homepage also features a large photo of one of their products in action so customers can envision themselves in this tranquil setting.

Visuals are great for decision making too. We process images much faster than we do text. According to MIT, our brains can process and remember an image in as little as 13 milliseconds. That’s basically in the blink of an eye.

Visuals feed information into consumer’s brains faster and easier, reducing the time and energy they need to spend making the decision process. Any time that a customer doesn’t need to overthink a purchase is generally a great outcome for you.

Emotions play an enormous part in consumer habits. UX design that incorporates and appeals to human emotion will generate more conversions and purchases than a flat, lifeless design.

About the brand

ACDC Express has a vision to be the preferred electrical retailer. Its franchise network aims to be the best solutions-driven electrical retailer, focused on customer service and convenience to ensure that customers’ electrical needs are satisfied. DIY enthusiasts, contractors and large corporates are all catered for in the product range of over 75 000 individual items available at ACDC Express stores.

It is this variety, extensive choice and customer experience that led Andries and his wife Seriska to invest in the flagship ACDC Express franchise in 2008.

Related: ACDC Express Franchise Opportunity

“My wife had a mining supply company and I was a fuel retailer when we decided to become ACDC Express’ first franchisee,” says Andries, who relocated with Seriska from Phalaborwa to Nelspruit to launch their new venture. “Seriska’s company was successful and we wanted to branch out into the electrical industry. ACDC Express stood out for us in this regard.”

The power of past entrepreneurial experience

ACDC Express

As a serial entrepreneur, Andries knew that his previous experience as a franchisee would come in handy when ensuring business success.

“I’ve always been an entrepreneur,” he says. “My father ran a men’s outfitter shop while I was growing up and that led me away from the path of formal employment.”

Tsholo’s entrepreneurial background also drew her to the franchise. “I have always been interested in construction and I realised that we can’t all be contractors. So, I decided to look at a field that supplies into that industry. I did my research and realised the electrical field was an option,” she says.

Capitalising on opportunities and high demand franchises

Tsholo, who runs her franchise alongside her business partner Puseletso, has been a business owner for over a decade and still runs her events management company alongside her ACDC Express store.

Related: ACDC – The Electrical ‘Supermarket’

She couldn’t pass up the opportunity to capitalise on the high demand for an alternative electrical supplier in the Northern Cape when she set up her 100% black women-owned franchise in May 2017.

“A franchise enables a small business to compete with big businesses, due to the pool of support from the franchisor and network of other franchisees,” she says.

“Banks are more willing to finance franchisees, because the market has been tested. The effort to start the business is less due to the support provided by the franchisor.”

The benefits of an ADCD Express franchise

An ACDC Express franchise has a number of draw cards for prospective business owners. For Tsholo, it was the personalised ‘supermarket’ experience, whereby customers are able to browse the store at their own leisure.

For Andries, it has been the opportunity to provide greater input to the franchisor and fellow franchisees to expand the footprint of ACDC Express.

“We helped determine the changes that were invested into future franchises and watched their implementation right before our eyes,” says Andries. “The franchisor is always prepared to listen to our suggestions.”

Support from franchisors lead to success

Tsholo and Andries both believe that the support of ACDC Express is more than sufficient, as the franchisor sets up the business, provides continuous support and training, and offers ongoing advice to its franchisees.

This combination of a hands-on franchisor as well as franchisees who are driven and hardworking ensures the success of the business.

If You Can't Leave Work to Tour With Coldplay, Consider These Other Options to Battle Stress

[ad_1]

Greet stress with a strong defense. Find a mentor. And eliminate stress points with your staff.

6 min read

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

It's lonely in the corner office. It's also stressful. Although you will rarely actually hear an entrepreneur complain about the pressure of running a successful business, there's no denying that the stress that accompanies leadership responsibilities at any company, successful or not, can be an obstacle.

Relateds: Workplace Stress Is at a Record High. Here's What's Causing It.

So, when stepping away from the job to tour with Coldplay (or your other, favorite fill-in-the-blanks, band) isn't an option, here are five quick methods for controlling stress before it controls you.

1. Step back. Pause. Repeat.

Feeling rushed and overwhelmed every day has a negative effect on decision-making skills, the ability to connect with others and, ultimately, your health. Many of today's business leaders recognize the risks of stress and sometimes take rather unconventional measures to stay in control. In her book What I Know For Sure, Oprah Winfrey admited that standing in a quiet bathroom does wonders for a person's emotional state. "I usually go to a quiet place," she writes. "A bathroom cubicle works wonders. I close my eyes, turn inward and breathe."

2. Greet stress with a strong defense.

It's not possible to step away from the stress that accompanies work or household duties. But, in some cases, stepping away is an important part of moving forward and facing new challenges. Author and strategic coach Dan Sullivan has addressed that perspective as the base for progress. "Opposition arises in your brain as soon as you visualize a bigger and better result in the future," he's said. "This is totally natural, totally automatic and totally necessary."

Sometimes, though, we all need an outlet to cope better with the pressures of regular stress. For example, some of my entrepreneurial friends took up running around the same time they started a new business. Another bought a boat and made sure to schedule recreation time in his workweek. My own outlet entails taking time off from 3 to 8 every day to hang out with my kids. When I put on my Mom hat and taxi the kids around to their after-school activities, I can better put things into perspective and let go of the stress of the day.

3. Find a mentor.

Mentors have the ability to help you place things into perspective and reduce stress like no other resource. When I was a young executive, I had a situation where one of my team members sent out an email to the wrong list. It reached only about 100 people, but the fact that we made the mistake really worried me. I wondered whether I should go to my boss or try to handle it on my own -- but decided to trust my mentor. He immediately put things into perspective, listened and said simply, "We have to do better." I felt a huge relief knowing that the email was not a grave error and that he trusted me to keep moving forward.

Relateds: The Impact Of Chronic Work Stress On Your Employees

A study by the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) found that "the presence of a mentor may mitigate personal barriers that lead to stress and burnout." In addition, people who have been mentored have been more likely to have lower levels of burnout, the study said. Whether the mentoring is formal or informal, Lebena Varghese, the doctoral candidate at Northern Illinois University who led the SIOP study, wrote that both relationships can be beneficial to workers.

Thrive contributor Doug Andrew also weighed in. Mentorship, he wrote, can decrease stress, especially when the mentor has the ability to manage stress well: In "the presence of a leader who can keep his or her cool in a crisis," Andrew wrote, "employees are also helped to remain calm." So, find that mentor who can teach you to manage stress, understand factors related to burnout and place things into perspective.

4. Lead and serve.

Stress is contagious. So if you are feeling pressure, chances are your staff has caught the bug, too. Now, then, may be a good time to focus on your employees to uncover stressors and re-evaluate work culture. Can you improve the work atmosphere? Do employees feel they are contributing to the company's goals?

Sometimes, the cure for what ails you in the workplace is to get out of the workplace. "Encourage employees to take time from their day to exercise at the gym, take a walking lunch or meeting or try a yoga class," says Entrepreneur contributor Amy Vetter. "You'll find that your employees will work smarter, and have greater focus and clarity of thought."

Also, many companies are organizing employee community projects that enable staff members to use company time for charitable efforts. "Our study of several hundred companies and more than 380,000 employees revealed that giving back is associated with greater employee retention, higher levels of brand ambassadorship on the part of workers and more enthusiastic employees," said Ed Frauenheim, owner of the research firm Great Place to Work, wrote in Fortune.

"Staffers who believe their organizations give back to the community are a striking 13 times more likely to look forward to coming to work, compared to employees who do not perceive their employers to be generous toward the community," Frauenheim continued. By initiating new leadership pathways to better serve your staff, you may discover that eliminating stress points with your staff will alleviate some of your stress, too.

5. Keep your eye on the prize.

That's right. You wanted this, remember? When stress becomes a distraction, try to focus on your professional and personal goals. "Celebrate when you make significant progress toward a goal," wrote Dan Steiner, an Entrepreneur contributor. "Over time, you'll learn to pay more attention to what you've accomplished rather than feeling daunted by the many things you have left to do."

When the workload becomes especially heavy, my husband and I often walk our dog (at 11:30 p.m., when we're finished with our work for the day) and focus on the progress we have made during the past five years -- not just that particular long day. This focus on long-term progress helps to put things into perspective when we feel like hamsters on a wheel.
