How This Freelance Approach Can Produce Full-Time Results

[ad_1]

Companies are exploring a workforce model with 10 percent full-time workers and 90 percent freelancers.

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

Not that long ago, people viewed freelancers as the people that carried out menial outsourced responsibilities. If companies had a low-skilled, repetitive task such as data entry or phone support that no full-timer wanted, they'd delegate it to a freelancer.

But the growing number of highly skilled talent choosing to freelance shows that it's not just mundane tasks that they're choosing to take on. In fact, 40 percent of the 1,267 American adults polled in December by NPR and Marist do freelance work in addition to their regular jobs; an additional study, a joint venture conducted by Harvard University's Lawrence Katz and Princeton University's Alan Krueger, found that 60 percent of the jobs created in the U.S. from 2005 to 2015 were of the freelance, independent contractor or contract company variety.

Related: The Future is Freelance: How to Optimize Independent Worker Output

This shifting workforce should be a signal to CEOs to rethink their internal organizational structures. And as we all know, rethinking leads to change, which can be difficult for a large organization -- even when it recognizes that one is needed.

Major independence

If the best talent is no longer keen on full-time employment, how will you structure your teams going forward? Some companies use a 50-50 freelance to full-time split, while others break it down to 90 percent full-time and 10 percent freelancers. But business is moving to a point where companies are starting to explore a model with 10 percent full-time workers and 90 percent freelancers.

Though the 10/90 model isn't well-known by that particular name, it has already been used with success. Publishing, for example, was one of the first industries to experiment with that shift. Over time, more and more editors, writers and contributors chose independence over steady gigs. Other professionals soon followed suit, and we’re now seeing designers, software developers, project managers, research analysts and even educators adopt a freelance mentality.

If you move to a similar model, you'll have a few considerations to keep in mind. The following will often top the list:

1. Don't onboard with a one-size-fits-all mentality.

Your company probably has an onboarding and orientation process in place for new hires, but the onboarding of freelancers is completely different. Most state employment regulations prohibit you from training a freelancer the same way you would a full-timer, and freelance onboarding has to account for the workers' remote locations and various duties.

My tenure at Google opened my eyes to how important that distinction can be. During my time there, I saw all freelancers onboarded the same way, whether the job was a two-month-long on-site design project or a two-day-long one-off video shoot. That structure, which showed me how important it is for companies to adapt their practices to accommodate their diverse freelance workforces, was a crucial factor in why I started my current company.

Freelance work responsibilities, as the Google example indicates, mean different things for different employees. FreshBooks' second annual Self-Employment Report shows that 68 percent of those surveyed enjoy a greater work-life balance once self-employed, while 59 percent say they work harder than expected. No two employees are alike, so it's important not to treat them in a binary manner.

Some workers want to take on more, and others want to work on their own terms. If someone’s freelancing for two weeks, that person doesn’t necessarily need to learn the ins and outs of the entire company. Structure onboarding to reflect the services that the worker is delivering.

2. Don't take quality for granted.

Devoting 10 percent of your workforce to full-timers means it's a given that your in-house staff numbers will diminish. But don't let fewer internal employees inadvertently diminish your quality of work; instead, put processes in place to ensure that your services maintain consistent in quality.

Consider a marketing department at a consumer finance company like LendingTree. Marketing teams often have big project launches or seasonal peaks like tax season that result in incredible demand to deliver more marketing materials than other times throughout the year. This is why the consumer loan company automated its ad buying through RevJet while its marketing department puts human labor toward more pressing revenue-driving matters.

LendingTree's use of RevJet demonstrates that a company's services don't have to suffer during a reallocation of human resources. Setting clear expectations and deliverables for freelancers at a project's outset will ensure that quality issues are the exception -- not the rule.

A stripped-down staff doesn't mean your services need to suffer. To maintain consistency, assemble the right tools to track and compile output. Ask yourself, “What do I need in terms of resources to get this off the ground? What will I need as I try to scale and maintain a quality of work?” Put processes and resources in place to ensure stability in quality as you work more freelancers into the mix.

3. Get compliance in order.

The availability of technology is what makes freelancing such an attainable option for those interested. An Oxford Internet Institute study of online workers found that 24 percent of those who work online reside in India, followed by Bangladesh (16 percent) and the U.S. (12 percent).

Engaging international freelancers can have serious tax and employment implications, so understanding the rules and regulations for working with people across state lines and international borders is paramount. Otherwise, you could end up liable for fines or even end up in a lawsuit.

For instance, two participants in Netflix's "Project Beetlejuice" -- which pays freelancers to watch movies and choose clips -- filed suit against the streaming service because it misclassified them as freelancers rather than employees. They allege that Netflix tried to get around the time-and-a-half payment often associated with overtime. When the majority of your workforce is independent, you need to carefully consider factors like worker classification and compliance.

Get all your legalities in order. If your company works with freelancers in other states or countries, get a clear understanding of each area's respective freelancer laws. Then, ensure that each freelancer is classified correctly in order to avoid any financial or legal blowback.

Freelance work is here to stay. And if business keeps moving in its current direction, there’ll be no way to get around bringing more than one freelancer into the fold. So make sure you’ve got the right technology and processes in place for success.

Telemarketing Scammer Sentenced - High Paying Affiliate Programs

https://www.highpayingaffiliateprograms.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/27568497474_c9276f2ab2.jpg [ad_1]

Alleged Scammer Sentenced for Fraudulent Telemarketing Operation

The U.S. Department of Justice has announced that an individual who allegedly managed a multimillion dollar fraudulent telemarketing scam was sentenced to approximately 5 years in prison by a federal judge in Nevada and ordered to pay $2.7 in restitution. The monetary component is intended to reflect victim losses from the scheme.

The defendant pleaded guilty in December 2017 to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud based on his alleged role in managing a telemarketing operation that, according to the DOJ, defrauded thousands of victims out of millions of dollars. The victims included elderly individuals. A co-defendant was sentenced earlier this year to 87 months in prison.

“This case demonstrates the Department of Justice’s commitment to prosecuting scammers who defraud elderly Americans,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Chad A. Readler of the Justice Department’s Civil Division. “We will continue to take every step possible to prosecute perpetrators of elder fraud scams and deliver justice for victims.”

“Seniors and caregivers should be alert to and mindful of these types of scams. Criminals who prey on and steal from seniors will face prosecution and be brought to justice,” said U.S. Attorney Dayle Elieson for the District of Nevada. “If someone believes they or someone they know is a victim of elder fraud, they should report it to the FTC at 1-877-FTC-HELP. The Department of Justice provides a variety of resources relating to elder fraud victimization through its Office of Victims of Crime, which can be reached at www.ovc.gov.”

According to court documents , the defendant managed the alleged fraudulent telemarketing operation for his co-defendant, who controlled the operation. The DOJ alleges that telemarketers working for the two falsely represented to victims that they had won one of numerous valuable prizes, including a Chevy Camaro, a Boston Whaler boat, a diamond-and-sapphire bracelet, $3,000 in cash, or a cruise that could be exchanged for thousands in cash. To claim the prize, consumers were informed that they had to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars. Once they did so, according to the DOJ, victims received worthless costume jewelry, or nothing.

The Department of Justice also alleges that individuals that made an initial payment were sometimes called again, and misled into believing they had won an even more valuable prize, in a process called “loading” or “reloading,” which could be repeated multiple times. The DOJ alleges that this process caused victims to lose thousands of dollars.

Acting Assistant Attorney General Readler commended the investigative efforts of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. He also thanked the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)’s civil enforcement action that resulted in the shutdown of the defendants’ telemarketing operation and for the FTC’s assistance during the criminal investigation and prosecution.

In 2013, the Federal Trade Commission obtained an injunction appointing a receiver and freezing the assets of one of the defendants, an alleged repeat offender, whom the agency first stopped from making deceptive telemarketing pitches 15 years ago.

According to the FTC, based on the role of one of the defendants in an earlier film investment scheme, in 1998 a federal district court entered an order permanently banning him from engaging in telemarketing and prohibiting him from making material misrepresentations about any product or service. In addition to the order, the FTC had obtained a prior order in 1996 against the defendant in connection with a business opportunity scam, and he has also been the subject of enforcement actions by other federal agencies.

3 Tips for Thriving Among Industry Giants

[ad_1]

Stand out with your startup in a world of giants.

5 min read

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

Startups have never had it easy. Big businesses hate disruption, and when a new company starts doing things differently, established players do everything they can to steal the ideas and squash the competition.

PepsiCo, for example, has mechanized the process. Through its partnership with Black Swan Data, PepsiCo hopes to identify trends before they become, well, trendy and beat would-be disruptors to the punch in an effort to compete with its smaller competitors. This is because, as PepsiCo leaders suggest, smaller businesses are better able to keep up with trends.

Fortunately, startups don’t have to let big players such as PepsiCo steal their advantages without a fight. The biggest companies have the deepest pockets and the most service lines, so small companies must focus on niches, becoming industry specialists and offering nimble customer service.

Old-fashioned relationship building is the key. Most big players rely on dial-up customer service, but they don’t make in-person visits to facilities and events. Startups excel in the trenches where big companies don’t bother to go. Through superior customer service and personal relationships, startups can provide something that no big company can match.

The trick for small companies is to act like a small business while demonstrating the power of a larger one. By using the right combination of tactics, startups can not only survive in this cutthroat environment, but also thrive.

Related: 5 Ways Startups Can Help Time-Tested, Traditional Industries Evolve

1. Always respond to prospects quickly and personally.

Smaller companies differentiate themselves from big ones through faster, more in-depth human communication. One company recently sent me a form email about buying a list from a database. I sent back my interest, but only received a second form email in response -- one that didn’t even answer my questions. If a real person had emailed me back with answers to my specific questions, that company likely would have earned my business.

Whether in person or on the phone, respond quickly and personally to maximize the small business charm. Companies of all sizes have adopted automated software for marketing, but relying on automation loses the personal touch that differentiates small businesses from corporations.

If a consumer demonstrates interest in an automated channel -- such as an email or ad -- the worst way for a small company to respond is with an automated reaction. When we notice a prospect engages with one of our digital platforms, we have a person reach out to acknowledge the engagement and request a call.

2. Don’t solve unique problems with standard solutions.

Big companies fit clients into preset boxes. Smaller companies can be nimble in their ability to customize offerings to match specific needs. That’s why PepsiCo wants to stay on trend: to compete with smaller, more agile brands. Startups should take advantage of this by providing more specific service to customers who would fall through the cracks at larger entities.

One of our clients, Toyota Forklifts, chose our small company over plenty of bigger options for this reason. Toyota needed specific help that no one offered. Rather than go with “good enough” from a big provider, Toyota asked us how much it would cost to hire the people we would need to power the new program. That’s an uncommon level of customization, but our small size allowed us to rework our internal structure to meet a need no one else could.

Related: Do Your Clients Trust Your Team? 3 Ways to Ensure They Do

3. Keep the face of the company familiar.

Big companies have big sales teams and lots of people who interact with clients. Small companies have only a few, but this can be a strength. McKinsey found that maximizing customer satisfaction through a consistent customer journey can potentially increase customer satisfaction by 20 percent and boost revenue by 15 percent. Keep the point of human contact as consistent as possible so prospects feel that they’re dealing with a person -- not a brand.

While startups use personal service to get in front of clients, big companies invest in technology so they don’t have to. Keep personnel the same through the inquiry, proposal, launch and implementation phases. Customers will feel more valued if they are not being shuffled from one department to the next.

Salesforce is a successful, giant company, but there are no personalized terms for clients. The company has standard contracts, standard pricing, and a 1-800 number for prospects to call. In other words, the customers never talk to the same rep twice.

When I spoke to the owner of a boat company who was considering Salesforce, he asked why, instead, he should consider us -- especially when the largest customer relationship management company in the world wanted his business. I asked him, “Is the person you talked to at Salesforce today going to be the same person who will work with you after the sale?” Those are the questions small companies must ask to compete with big businesses.

No matter how much ground big companies cover, they can’t be everything for every customer, and that leaves an opening for startups to survive and thrive. Small companies can leverage their agility, flexibility and creativity to go above and beyond for customers where the big businesses would otherwise get stuck in the mud. Small companies that focus on building active, solution-forward relationships with customers will find it’s easier to win out against the sluggish big businesses in today’s fast-moving market.

Why You Need to Make Money Online (Even If It’s Not Full-Time)

http://cache.johnchow.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/piggybank-688x387.jpg [ad_1]

Let me start by saying this. At a fundamental level, it doesn’t really matter if you want to be a professional blogger, web developer, affiliate marketer, freelance writer or anything else. If you want to grow your online business to the point where it can fully replace the income you’re receiving from your day job, then you need to quit your day job. It is only when your online business becomes your sole professional focus that you can grow it to its full potential.

And yes, it’s true that not everyone is going to succeed. Sometimes through no direct fault of their own, nothing works out. Or maybe they give up too easily. Or maybe they didn’t have the right business strategy for the current market. It could be any number of things. But you also can’t wait for all your ducks to get in a row before you decide to take the plunge. You just have to decide to take that leap of faith and absorb those failures in stride.

Maybe you’re not ready to abandon your day job altogether and that’s okay too. It’s a personal decision. Maybe you don’t actually want to quit your day job at all and you want to pursue your online business as a side hustle. While it won’t ever really reach its full potential that way, this might be the right decision for your circumstances. Maybe. That’s up to you.

The Most Important Thing

Here’s the thing. So many people never get started at all, because they assume that if they can’t dedicate themselves full time to their online business that they shouldn’t even try. And that’s hardly true.

I argued a few years ago that making money online is actually more stable than a regular job. I encourage you to go back and read that post if you haven’t already done so. Even if you hold on to your day job, you can think of making money online as your security cushion. Through circumstances beyond your control (or even within your control), you could lose your job tomorrow. You could get fired or laid off.

Then what?

If you decide to start your online business from scratch after you’ve already lost your day job, there’s a good chance that you might not make any money at all for the first several months. Are you prepared for that? By contrast, if you’ve already gotten started and your business is already generating some modest revenue, you can at least rely on some positive cash flow as you now dedicate yourself to growing your business even further (or looking for another day job if you must).

Saving for the Future

How much do you think the typical 40-something in America has stashed away in retirement savings? They would’ve been working for about 20 years at this point, so they should have a decent amount set aside, right? According to MSN Money, the average (mean) retirement savings at that age is about $81,000.

That’s not bad, but it could be a lot better. Experts recommend that you should have about four times your annual salary saved at that point in your life, which for the average 40-something American would be closer to $200,000. But do you know what’s even scarier? The median retirement savings for a typical 40-something American is just $6,200.

What this means is that half of the people in this demographic have more than $6,200 saved and half have less than $6,200. That’s not a very bright picture indeed and there’s no way that you’re going to retire with just $6,200 set aside.

Keep the Cash Flowing

How does this tie into an online business? Even when it’s just a side hustle, your online business can grow into another source of income. And the income you earn from that can be invested and saved, getting the money to work for you and to make more money on its own. The earlier you can start this process, the better.

And the earlier you can start this process, the sooner you can retire (and with more money in your savings too)… assuming you want to retire at all.

Having a grasp on your financials is tricky, but it's crucial if you want to be successful. And that starts with getting the right advice.

2 min read

Whether it’s saving for retirement or paying off credit card debt, money management can be a challenge. Of course, different people have different concerns -- and that often comes with age. While a 60-something baby boomer might be organizing their savings for retirement, your 20-something millennial might be focused on paying off student loans.

In a recent study, financial intelligence company Comet surveyed more than 1,000 people to uncover the top financial concerns of various age groups, as well as the financial advice millennials and gen Zers want to know and what they hear instead.

Overall, saving for retirement was the top concern across all age groups, with saving for an emergency and affording monthly bills following in second and third. However, it’s no wonder these are some of the most pressing worries -- according to the research, 23 percent of people admit they don’t have a savings account, and 43 percent reported not being on track towards their retirement goals. Perhaps that’s because they didn’t hear the right advice growing up. At least that might be the case for gen Zers and millennials.

According to the research, these young people want to learn things such as how the stock market works, how to manage an investment portfolio, how to invest in real estate and how to build credit. Instead, they’re simply told how to create a budget, save for retirement and pay credit card bills in full every month.

Having a grasp on your financials is tricky, but it’s crucial if you want to be successful and comfortable. To learn more, check out Comet’s infographic below.

The New 'This Is Your Brain On Cannabis' Ad Is Rad

http://img.youtube.com/vi/GOnENVylxPI/0.jpg [ad_1]

A PSA that aims to take the stigma out of using legal marijuana.

1 min read

Opinions expressed by Green Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

If you're old enough, you may remember the classic anti-drug PSA, "This is Your Brain On Drugs" from the 80s. The ad, sponsored by Drug-Free America, featured a man picking up and egg and saying, "This is your brain." He then points to a frying pan and says, "This is your brain." Cracking the egg into the pan and watching it fry, he concludes, "This is your brain on drugs."

Now, a cannabis-focused creative ad agency, Artisans on Fire, has done a clever parody of the concept to help fight the stigma against legal cannabis.

According to a press release, they "hope this video (made pro bono just like the original PSAs) would serve as a simple, direct, and effective approach to highlighting some of the more positive uses of cannabis, like heightened creativity, improved mood, etc."

Professional chef Todd Sugimoto participates to help raise awareness around the idea that cannabis is used safely by legal aged adults and business professionals at the top of their craft (like Chef Todd), as well.

About Affiliate Marketing - High Paying Affiliate Programs

[ad_1]

What You Need To Know About Affiliate Marketing

Whether you’re an ordinary consumer or a business owner, you need to learn a little more about affiliate marketing. After all, affiliates impact the lives of pretty much anyone and everyone. If you buy something on a recommendation, there is a possibility that the person in question was an affiliate marketer. This is coincidence. Affiliate marketing is a big business and it is equally beneficial for the affiliate and the company. So, what is affiliate marketing all about? How does it work? You’ll find out in the informative guide below.

What Is It?

First and foremost, you should learn a little more about affiliate marketing. What is it exactly? Well, affiliate marketing is a partnership between a company and affiliates. The company instructs the affiliates to get out there and sell their products. Each time an affiliate is able to convince someone to buy their product, they’re awarded a commission. It is in the affiliate’s best interest to sell as much as possible as quickly as possible. This is why they need to learn the product thoroughly.

What is XBT? This is something that they would need to learn if they had the intention of selling Bitcoin to others.

Equally Beneficial

You should know that affiliate marketing is going to be equally beneficial for everyone involved. First and foremost, the company benefits because they’re selling more goods and services. And, they’re paying a minimum amount to get those sales. The affiliate is also happy, because they’re making money along the way. Affiliate marketing is helpful for the company and the affiliate. This is why affiliate marketing has been around for so many years.

Becoming An Affiliate

The truth of the matter is that becoming an affiliate is going to be much easier than you could ever imagine. There are tons of affiliate programs out there. In fact, they’re offered by some of the world’s biggest companies, including Amazon, Walmart, and more. All you have to do is visit the websites of these companies and look for the affiliate program link. Once you’ve done that, you’ll be able to sign up and begin working as an affiliate. Sometimes, you will need to be approved. If not, you’ll be able to sign up without any hiccups.

Choosing Right Products To Promote

The key to earning a high commission through affiliate marketing is choosing the right products to promote. There are so many companies now offering affiliate opportunities, but some of these companies do not offer products that are popular among consumers. One thing is for sure your best bet is to stick with the top brands, as this seems to be what consumers are looking for.

Amazon offers one of the best affiliate marketing opportunities. Today, Amazon has literally thousands of affiliates, promoting products such as shoes, toasters, pressure cookers, refrigerators, smart locks and much more. Target and eBay also have great affiliate marketing programs that allow participates to earn a lump sum of money monthly. Choosing the right program and products is really the first step to making it big.

Devil's Lettuce? Love Nuggets? The DEA Has Some Pretty Creative Names for Marijuana

http://img.youtube.com/vi/1m58giTA-OE/0.jpg [ad_1]

A new intelligence report from the agency reveals 250 slang words for the plant. Some are classic.

3 min read

Opinions expressed by Green Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

If you ever find yourself dealing with law enforcement, you might want to avoid mentioning anything about shoes. Or-- just to be really safe --blueberries.

Why? If those officers have read a recently declassified Drug Enforcement Administration intelligence report, they might think you're talking about marijuana.

Both Blueberry and Shoes are listed, improbably, in the report as code names for marijuana. And those are just two of more than 250 names for cannabis included on the DEA list.

Related: Is Medical Marijuana Really Legal In Your State? Define Legal.

'Pot' is so passé

The names pot and weed are synonymous with marijuana pretty much anywhere on the planet. Terms such as Mary Jane, Grass, and Chronic (thanks to Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg) are also are widely used.

But, apparently, in the line of duty, DEA agents have come across some very imaginative street words for cannabis. Many which we've never heard before. Among our favorites:

  • Alfalfa
  • Alice B. Toklas
  • Bambalachacha
  • Boo
  • Boom
  • Burritos Verdes
  • Chernobyl
  • Devil’s Lettuce
  • Grand Daddy Purp
  • Green Goblin
  • Holy Grail
  • Love Nuggets
  • Mowing the Lawn
  • My Brother
  • Mother
  • Queen Ann’s Lace
  • Skywalker
  • Smoochy Woochy Poochy
  • Tigitty
  • Yellow Submarine

None of which make the least bit of sense. But read together down that list, it’s like a tone poem to human ingenuity with language.  Heck, there are six just using the word blue: Blue Cheese, Blue Crush, Blue Dream, Blue Jeans, Blue Sage, and the aforementioned Blueberry.

Alice B. Toklas

And now a word on Alice B. Toklas.

Her name made the DEA list of cannabis slang names. So who is she?

Toklas is a real person. Born in San Francisco, she moved to Paris when she was about 30. Shortly after arriving, she met and started a 40-year relationship with writer Gertrude Stein. Their salon in Paris was a meeting place for all sorts of interesting people, including Pablo Picasso, Sherwood Anderson, and Ernest Hemingway.

In 1954, after Stein’s death, Toklas wrote a popular cookbook and memoir that included a recipe for pot brownies. The irony is that it supposedly wasn’t even her recipe. However, she was forever associated with cannabis. They even made a movie with her recipe as a central part of the plot.

And so, her name remains marijuana slang to this day.

Facebook Page Administrator Shares Responsibility

https://www.highpayingaffiliateprograms.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/27568497474_c9276f2ab2.jpg [ad_1]

Administer of Facebook Fan Page Considered Data Processor

The Court Justice of the European Union recently held that the administrator of a Facebook fan page is jointly responsible with Facebook for the processing of data of visitors to the page.

As set forth in a June 5 ,2018 press release, the German company Wirtschaftsakademie Schleswig-Holstein operates in the field of education. It offers educational services by means of a fan page hosted on Facebook. Fan pages are user accounts that can be set up on Facebook by individuals or businesses. To do so, the author of the fan page, after registering with Facebook, can use the platform designed by Facebook to introduce himself to the users of that social network and to persons visiting the fan page, and to post any kind of communication in the media and opinion market.

Administrators of fan pages, such as Wirtschaftsakademie, can obtain anonymous statistical data on visitors to the fan pages via a function called “Facebook Insights” which Facebook makes available to them free of charge under non-negotiable conditions of use. The data is collected by means of evidence files (“cookies”), each containing a unique user code, which are active for two years and are stored by Facebook on the hard disk of the computer or on another device of visitors to the fan page. The user code, which can be matched with the connection data of users registered on Facebook, is collected and processed when the fan pages are opened.

By decision of 3 November 2011, the Unabhängiges Landeszentrum für Datenschutz Schleswig-Holstein (Independent Data Protection Centre for the Land of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany), as supervisory authority within the meaning of Directive 95/46 on data protection, with the task of supervising the application in the Land of Schleswig-Holstein of the provisions adopted by Germany pursuant to that directive, ordered Wirtschaftsakademie to deactivate its fan page.

According to the Unabhängiges Landeszentrum, neither Wirtschaftsakademie nor Facebook informed visitors to the fan page that Facebook, by means of cookies, collected personal data concerning them and then processed the data.

Wirtschaftsakademie brought an action against that decision before the German administrative courts, arguing that the processing of personal data by Facebook could not be attributed to it, and that it had not commissioned Facebook to process data that it controlled or was able to influence.

Wirtschaftsakademie concluded that the Unabhängiges Landeszentrum should have acted directly against Facebook instead of against it.

It is in that context that the Bundesverwaltungsgericht (Federal Administrative Court, Germany) asked the Court of Justice to interpret Directive 95/46 on data protection.

In its judgment, the Court of Justice observed that it is not disputed that Facebook (U.S.) and, for the EU, its Irish subsidiary Facebook Ireland must be regarded as “controllers” responsible for processing the personal data of Facebook users and persons visiting the fan pages hosted on Facebook. Those companies primarily determine the purposes and means of processing that data.

The Court found that an administrator such as Wirtschaftsakademie must be regarded as a controller jointly responsible, within the EU, with Facebook Ireland for the processing of that data.

The Court further found that such an administrator takes part, by its definition of parameters (depending in particular on its target audience and the objectives of managing or promoting its own activities), in the determination of the purposes and means of processing the personal data of the visitors to its fan page.

In particular, the Court noted that the administrator of the fan page can ask for demographic data (in anonymized form) – and thereby request the processing of that data – concerning its target audience (including trends in terms of age, sex, relationships and occupations), information on the lifestyles and centers of interests of the target audience (including information on the purchases and online purchasing habits of visitors to its page, and the categories of goods or services that appeal the most) and geographical data, telling the fan page administrator where to make special offers and organize events and more generally enabling it to target best the information it offers.

According to the Court, the fact that an administrator of a fan page uses the platform provided by Facebook in order to benefit from the associated services cannot exempt it from compliance with its obligations concerning the protection of personal data.

The Court stated that the recognition of joint responsibility of the operator of the social network and the administrator of a fan page hosted on that network in relation to the processing of the personal data of visitors to that fan page contributes to ensuring more complete protection of the rights of persons visiting a fan page, in accordance with the requirements of Directive 95/46 on data protection.

In addition, the Court found that the Unabhängiges Landeszentrum is competent, for the purpose of ensuring compliance in German territory with the rules on the protection of personal data, to exercise with respect not only to Wirtschaftsakademie but also to Facebook Ireland all the powers conferred on it under the national provisions transposing Directive 95/46.

“Where an undertaking established outside the EU (such as Facebook) has several establishments in different Member States, the supervisory authority of a Member State is entitled to exercise the powers conferred on it by Directive 95/463 with respect to an establishment of that undertaking in the territory of that Member State even if, as a result of the division of tasks within the group, first, that establishment (in the present case, Facebook Germany) is responsible solely for the sale of advertising space and other marketing activities in the territory of the Member State concerned and, second, exclusive responsibility for collecting and processing personal data belongs, for the entire territory of the EU, to an establishment situated in another Member State (in this case, Facebook Ireland).”

The Court further stated that, where the supervisory authority of a Member State (in this case, the Unabhängiges Landeszentrum in Germany) intends to exercise with respect to an entity established in the territory of that Member State (in this case, Wirtschaftsakademie) the powers of intervention provided for in Directive 95/46,4 on the ground of infringements of the rules on the protection of personal data committed by a third party responsible for the processing of that data whose seat is in another Member State (in this case, Facebook Ireland), that supervisory authority is competent to assess, independently of the supervisory authority of the other Member State (Ireland), the lawfulness of such data processing and may exercise its powers of intervention with respect to the entity established in its territory without first calling on the supervisory authority of the other Member State to intervene.

The Ultimate Guide to Saving Money on Utilities

[ad_1]

These basic steps should save you several hundred dollars a year or more.

9 min read

This story originally appeared on Due

Utilities are a practical necessity, but they occupy a massive line on your monthly budget. The typical American family spends more than $2,000 a year on utility bills, including electricity, water and sewage and natural gas -- and depending on where you live, you might spend even more than that. If you can manage to cut those costs by just 25 percent, you could be saving money on utilities. This includes savings of more than $500 a year. And, if you cut them by 50 percent, you could save more than $1,000.

Saving money on utilities

So, what steps can you take toward saving money on utilities? There are some general strategies you can use for all three main types of utilities. Plus, there are specific lifestyle habits and strategies you can use for each type of utility.

Monitoring

The first key to success is consistently monitoring your usage (and how much you spend every month). Only with these numbers in front of you will you be able to determine your best and worst categories. This will also help determine whether your new strategies directed at saving money on utilities are working.

Upgrading your appliances

You can start by upgrading your appliances. After all, your appliances are the conduits through which you use the majority of your utilities.

  • Purchase newer, energy-efficient models. Energy-efficient heaters, air conditioning units, refrigerators and other appliances might cost a bit of money upfront (usually hundreds to thousands of dollars). Over the course of years, you’ll easily make up for those costs with utility bill savings. Every year, appliances get more efficient. If any of your appliances are more than a decade old, it’s time to replace them.
  • Install low-flow showerheads and faucet heads. You can save water by installing low-flow showerheads and faucet heads throughout your house. This is especially true if the house is more than a decade old. You might be turned off at the term “low flow,” but these heads are designed to maximize pressure. You probably won’t tell the difference, but you’ll use far less water over time.
  • Adjust your water heater thermostat. Your water heater relies on natural gas to keep the water at a steady temperature. Many homeowners don’t know you can change that maximum temperature. The factory default setting for most models is 140 degrees F, but you’ll probably never need more than 120 degrees. That drop in temperature can save you significant money every month.

Changing your home

Next, you can make upgrades to your home. Some of these can be costly, so work with whatever you can afford:

  • Invest in new windows. New windows can be expensive, costing a few thousand dollars for a full replacement for the average home. They can make a dramatic difference in the energy efficiency of your home. New windows are better insulated. This means your house will stay cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Your heating and cooling system won’t need to work nearly as hard, so you’ll save money.
  • Install more insulation. If there are any areas of your house that aren’t insulated or are poorly insulated, consider installing more, better insulation. Even one layer of standard-grade insulation can make a major difference in heating and cooling system efficiency.
  • Get a smart thermostat. Technology can almost always save you money in the long run. Investing in a smart thermostat will give you more control over the temperature of your home. This includes throughout the day when you aren’t around to adjust it manually. That way, you can keep your home at a reasonable temperature all the time without paying to heat or cool your home when you aren’t around.

Cleaning your house

Thankfully, this one won’t cost you much money -- just an hour or two of your time on a weekend. Keeping your house free from dust, dirt, animal fur and other contaminates increases airflow and reduces the burden of debris on your appliances.

It’s also a good idea to clean your appliances regularly. For example, clean out the coils on your refrigerator so it can continue to reach its ideal temperature without expending more energy than necessary. In general, the cleaner they are, the more efficiently they’re going to run.

Make sure the ductwork in your home gets cleaned out at least once a year. Dust and dirt can accumulate here and make your heating and cooling system far less efficient (not to mention adding contaminants to the air).

Using natural light

Natural light plays a powerful role in the temperature of your house; if you let too much light in during the summer, the inside of your house will heat up, while too much shade in the winter can make your house even colder. Use outdoor installations like trees and indoor installations like shades to carefully control how and where natural light hits your house; it’s a free way to cool or warm your home, depending on the season.

Conducting ongoing maintenance

Regular maintenance is one of the best strategies for saving money on utilities. There are several areas you’ll need to pay attention to:

  • Replace parts and make repairs. Over time, the parts on your appliances, especially those that use multiple utilities at once (like pools and spas), are going to degrade. It’s important to replace those parts as soon as possible so your appliance can continue to operate efficiently. If you let a repair go unattended for too long, your efficiency will drop, and you’ll end up paying more than you have to.
  • Replace your filters. The single best way to maintain your home and save money on utilities is to replace the filters on your heating and/or air conditioning units regularly (i.e., every three months, or even more often for high-use areas). These filters keep your appliances free from dirt and debris and ensure they continue operating smoothly.
  • Check for leaks. Plumbing leaks can be hard to detect, so it’s important to make a manual check for any leaks in your system. Check your toilets, showers, faucets and other plumbing related appliances for any leaks; even a slow drip can add up to cost you far more on your water bills every month. If you can, get a permanent fix rather than relying on duct tape or other temporary fixes.

Saving electricity

These additional tactics can help with saving money on utilities that involve electricity:

  • Cook with the stove or oven, rather than the microwave. Your microwave uses more in electricity than your stove will in natural gas. When possible, rely on your oven or stove to cook your food.
  • Operate your appliances wisely. In the summer, your appliances are going to generate more heat, making your air conditioner work harder. Try using your stove, oven and other heat-generating appliances at night, where they won’t have as much of an impact.
  • Rely on fans in the summer. Instead of running the air conditioner constantly, try relying on fans and open windows. It will still help you stay cool but without the high energy demands.
  • Adjust your refrigerator and freezer temperature. Take a moment to check your refrigerator and freezer temperature settings. Your refrigerator should be at 40 degrees F or less, while your freezer should be zero degrees F or less for food safety. If they’re too far below those figures, you’re wasting money by cooling them excessively.

Reducing water and sewage costs

If you’re more concerned about water and sewage costs, these strategies can help you:

  • Time your showers. Pay attention to how long you take showers. It’s probably longer than you realize. Reducing that time by just a few minutes a day can help you save several gallons of water every month.
  • Utilize the full capacity of your washing appliances. When using a washing machine or dishwasher, try to load the machine to its maximum capacity. That way, you won’t waste any water with an incomplete load.
  • Avoid excessive watering. It’s tempting to saturate your lawn to make it brighter, greener, and healthier. However, the excessive watering can get expensive fast. Keep your watering to a minimum, or rely on grass and plants that can get by with natural rainfall levels.

Saving natural gas

Finally, if you want to save more on natural gas, try these strategies:

  • Cook things in rapid succession. If you’re going to use the stove or oven, try cooking things simultaneously, or in rapid succession to make use of the heat you’re already generating. There’s no use bringing the appliance up to temperature twice.
  • Manage your hot water usage. Try not to use hot water unnecessarily. For example, there’s no added benefit to using hot water over cold water when washing dishes or doing the laundry, so use cold water and save some heat.
  • Wear a sweater. In the winter, rely on sweaters, blankets and other types of layering to keep yourself warm. It’s cost-efficient, always available and can help you keep the thermostat a few degrees lower than usual.

In saving money on utilities, you don’t have to go cold or adopt unreasonable lifestyle habits. These basic steps should save you several hundred dollars a year or more. On top of that, you’ll be helping the environment since you’ll be creating less pollution and wasting less natural resources. Try putting these strategies for saving money on utilities to work in your household, but don’t get too restrictive. There’s no need to make yourself uncomfortable for the sole sake of saving a few dollars.

4 Steps Women Should Take When Considering a Career Transition

[ad_1]

First, figure out what you want from your career.

5 min read

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

"I leave at 7 a.m. and get home at 7 p.m. to see my children for 30 minutes a day."

"My partner is taking a job across the country and I am terrified about starting over."

"I don't see a current ladder to success that I am excited to climb."

"I want to work and love my industry, but need more flexibility."

Sound familiar? These are just a sample of the reasons why women feel a pull to leave their jobs, yet 80 percent of those who plan to leave their current position in the next two years, intend to remain in the workforce. But, what next?

Related: You're Thinking About the Career Ladder All Wrong

For many women, this is the most daunting question. It was for me five years ago. I had two toddlers and I knew I didn't want to return to my earlier days of broadcast journalism and the frenetic schedule that comes with it. I also knew I wanted to remain engaged in the workforce, build my career and have the flexibility to manage my family needs too. "What do I want to do now?" was quickly followed by, "What am I qualified to do?" and, "What are my options?"

What came next was a deep dive into my own motivations, fears and abilities. The result is The Second Shift, a company I co-founded in 2013 as a solution for women facing similar life/work choices. In the process I have spoken with, interviewed and coached thousands of talented, professional women who asked themselves the same questions and decided to pursue an independent path that works for them. While there is always risk involved with change, I found there are fundamental steps that can help guide you successfully on a new career journey.

Conduct an audit.

Dive deep, be honest with yourself and maintain optimism.

1. Think through what you like about your job; what parts do you want take with you, or leave behind?

2. What do you want and need from your career personally, financially and professionally?

3. Take stock of your skill set and what sets you apart. Be brutally honest with yourself about what you do well and where you have previously failed. Ask for feedback.

4. Be realistic. Set yourself up for success by knowing what is possible for you. Don't plan on switching from a banker to a doctor if you can't go back to school. Don't give up a full-time salary if you rely on it keep the lights on.

Related: How to Transition From the Corporate World to Entrepreneurship as a Working Woman

Set your intention.

Chart the path to your goals.

1. Visualize the goal. Imagine yourself living a day of your life in a year and then five years in the future. What is the goal of that life and do you like how it feels?

2. Write it down. Keep a journal of the path forward to reaching the goal and write down your thoughts and feelings as you move along.

3. Say it out loud. Telling people your plans makes it real. A dream in your head is not an intention.

4. Be confident. Use positive and strong language to own this intention. You are not hoping and wanting; you are doing.

Take a deep breath.

It's a journey; change will not happen overnight.

1. Keep yourself on track in working toward your goal, but don't be so rigid that you aren't open to deviations that might lead to new opportunities.

2. Identify an outlet to temper anxiety and fear and remain calm. Take up a hobby, learn how to meditate, work out. Do your homework (see below).

3. Stay positive. Learn how to breathe deeply and be confident of the outcome.

Related: How Losing Her Job Helped Jaclyn Johnson Find Her Inner CEO

Do your homework.

Prepare for your future success.

1. Get busy. Update your resume and LinkedIn profile. Set up your pricing model. Know the market you want to enter in detail.

2. Network! Get in touch with old and new colleagues and friends and tell them your plans. Take coffees, meetings and attend alumni networking events in your area.

3. Establish infrastructure at home. Does your family have extra care to give you the time and space you will need? Do you have a place to work and the tools required?

4. Brush up on your skills toolbox. Take classes, learn the latest technology that you will need to know. Make sure you are ready to jump in feet first. The demand for technological skills is expected to increase 55 percent by 2030.

5. Do projects, even if they are unpaid. It may feel like treading water, but it provides the benefit of keeping your resume fresh with new work.

Above all, do not allow fear or uncertainty to blind you to opportunities that present themselves along the way. As Michelle Obama wisely told Seventeen, "The question of what you want to be when you grow up is one that you will eternally be answering." Realize that you may not get exactly what you wrote down at the start of this exercise, but if you are open and aware, you may see other paths and outcomes that are ultimately better. There is no limit to your professional goals if you have a positive attitude, a strong network of supporters, confidence in yourself and the commitment to do the work necessary to achieve success on your own terms.

How To Hire An SEO Company

[ad_1]

Top Tips When Hiring an SEO Company

Getting a startup website off the ground is the vital first step to establishing a good online visibility. With nearly every company today putting efforts on their digital marketing, it’s not enough that you got an advertisement rolling on digital platforms; your business itself must be fully available on the digital landscape.

As cited from Entrepreneur,93% of online experiences starts with searching. That being said, leaving Search Engine Optimization (SEO) from your marketing strategies is simply a big mistake. When a tactic is properly executed, it can work great to give opportunities that may not not have been presented themselves otherwise. This is the reason why it is vital for every business to invest in SEO the early stage.

But before you jump to hiring an agency to help your business with its SEO needs, there are things you need to consider first to ensure you’ll be getting one that would really benefit your company. Below are three of our top tips to get you started:

Review Their Portfolio

Looking at the website of an SEO company, it’s likely you’ll find a list of clients they have previously worked with. Albeit there are some reasons for a client or two to remain private, the majority of them has no problem with putting their links on that website. In fact, some consider it as free publicity.

On the other hand, if their website has no list of business clients or any proof that they have worked for actual companies, you can consider it is a potential red flag.

Identify Your Goals

Once you identify a number of potential companies, the next step is to have a firm goal of how you would want to make the SEO campaign work for you. Usually, goals as such include increasing exposure, boosting leads and most especially getting more conversions.

However, these are already given and can be too general. What you might need is to specify your goals and give tangible figures for them to work on so you can easily track things once you start collaborating with them. For example is the number of unique visitors you’re aiming to have.

Do A Deeper Background Check

Of course, to win clients, companies would likely list testimonials with success stories. And whilst such are good reference, you need to conduct a deeper review towards the companies you’re eyeing.

The stories that would really help you are those you’ll hear from average clients. Ask them about their experiences from the company. It’s better if you can get a hold of at least three clients who availed their SEO service.

The stories you would want to hear are those from the average clients. What was their experience with the company? If you can, try to get a hold of at least three businesses that have used the agency’s services. Don’t only ask about the end results, know how the day-to-day processes gone like communication with them, especially for urgent matters and report deliveries.

Wrapping Up

Apparently, choosing an SEO company to work for you is like hiring a new employee. You wanna be sure that you’ll be able to reap benefits after investing into them. Though the decision process could be nothing but tricky, the above mentioned tips shall help you hire the right agency. And if you want to, I would love to recommend an SEO service in the Philippines offered by Carl Ocab Digital Marketing. You can apply the tips above when deciding to hire them.
