How to Raise Your Freelancing Rates

[ad_1]

As a freelancer, it's easy to underestimate yourself and get trapped in low-paying work.

5 min read

This story originally appeared on Personal Branding Blog

When you start out in your freelancing career, you may find yourself working for quite low rates. How low this rate will be will, of course, vary between careers and industries. If you’re entering a highly competitive industry like writing and you don’t have an impressive portfolio of work and clients to show off, then you can expect to work for less-than-ideal rates at the beginning. However, as you gain experience, sharpen your skills and build your portfolio, this should translate into a higher rate. One of the struggles of freelancing, though, is ascertaining the pay that you deserve.

It’s easy to underestimate yourself and get trapped in low-paying work. If you want to excel and grow in your freelancing career, then you need to learn the vital skill of raising your rates. Failure to do this can land you in a stagnant and unpleasant state of stress and overwork. Luckily, sometimes all it takes to avoid this scenario is sending a simple but tactfully constructed email to an existing client.

Know the value of your work

Part of the resistance in asking for a higher rate -- whether from an existing client or a new one -- is a lack of confidence in one’s abilities. Of course, it’s understandable to think that whatever you’re getting paid reflects your abilities because that’s the advertised rate or the rate you initially agreed to be paid. Nevertheless, over time and with persistence your skills will improve, which will translate into higher quality work and results for your client. For all the extra time, effort and attention you put into your work, you absolutely deserve a higher rate.

So before deciding to craft that email asking for a higher rate, you first have to realize how the value of your work increases over time. Having this confidence in your abilities will allow you to negotiate the rate you deserve at the time when you deserve it. Freelance writer Elna Cain argues that fellow writers shouldn’t be afraid to aim high when raising their rate. A 50 percent increase could be well-justified.

Related: Challenges Unique to the Entrepreneurial Woman

And if you struggle with a critical inner voice (as we all do) telling you that you’re not good enough, learn some techniques to silence this inner critic.

Don’t negotiate too early

Timing is also crucial when you’re negotiating a higher rate. Say you started working for a client three months ago, at a low rate. You’ve been performing well, consistently meeting deadlines, being prompt in your communications and satisfying the client’s needs and expectations. On the other hand, three months is perhaps too short a time frame in which to hone your skills in a way that allows you to exceed the client’s expectations for success.

Impatience may make you want to ask for a higher rate earlier than when you are in the best position to make your case for it. Becoming proficient at whatever it is that you do is a gradual process and involves years of commitment.

Having said that, if you’ve been working regularly for a client for 6 months or up to a year, then -- assuming you’ve also been focused on learning from mistakes and gaining new knowledge -- you should be producing higher quality work.

This applies to submitting your rates to potentially new clients as well. If you want to ask for a higher rate than what you’ve normally been earning, then you need to show the very best examples of your current output. In order to do this, make sure your freelance portfolio is professional and up-to-date.

Showing evidence in your email

It can be a bit nerve-racking when you decide to bite the bullet and send an email to an existing client asking for a higher rate. You may fear that this email could risk you losing that client and, therefore, a stable source of income. Yet part of developing your freelance career involves overcoming this fear and taking certain risks in order to reap the rewards.

Related: 4 Things to Consider Before Expanding Your Business

When asking for a higher rate, you want to offer some reasons why your client should agree to it. If you’re a writer, for instance, this may include the extra time you put into your research, SEO, editing and social media sharing. In your email, you could cite evidence of how your content is garnering more web traffic, subscribers, profits, downloads and activity on social media, as well as better Google rankings. You can also point to recent work that highlights your improved research skills and ability to create clean, useful and engaging content that perfectly matches the client’s needs in terms of style, tone, and voice.

A final tip is to always exceed your deadlines, as this is a sure fire way to leave a good impression with your client and make you stand out. It’s important to simultaneously make a well-evidenced case for your higher rate and put in the hard work so that your client isn’t surprised when you ask for a raise.

My November 2016 Monthly Income Report

https://cdn.smartpassiveincome.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Screenshot-2016-12-09-23.18.01-1024x208.png [ad_1]

Welcome to my November 2016 Monthly Income Report!

We’re quickly approaching the end of 2016, and this is the second to last monthly income report for the year before we all start fresh in 2017, so let’s get right to it!

As you know, I post these income reports not only to share the numbers behind my business, but also to share all of the important lessons I’ve learned and my plans for the future. I’ve been posting these reports since October 2008 when the blog started, so if you want to go back into the archives and check them out, head on over to the income report page here.

For now, let’s see what happened this past month!

Important Goings-On in November

November was a rough month for the Flynn family. It was probably the roughest month we’ve had in years in terms of general health, which put the brakes on much of the production work I wanted to do in November.

It was important for me to get a lot of work done because of an upcoming family trip to Australia for Christmas, as well as some big projects coming up at the start of the new year I wanted to clear the runway for. But I’m currently playing catch up on my editorial calendar because I got sick, and then the rest of the family did too.

It wasn’t really the kind of Thanksgiving break we were hoping for, but luckily out of all of the days in the second half of November, Thanksgiving Day seemed to be the one where we were all relatively doing okay.

For all of 2016, as far as I can remember, I was able to avoid any sicknesses. My wife, my son, and my daughter would occasionally get colds throughout the year, but I know that my intense focus on health and nutrition helped me avoid catching whatever they were sharing with each other. I was all clear until a steak did me in. At a restaurant in Anaheim, I got food poisoning, and it was all downhill from there.

I was in bed with a fever, aches, and pains for about a week and a half after that, and I won’t get into much more detail, but let’s just say that I lost a lot of water during that time. At the end of it, I lost six pounds and felt very weak, and definitely didn’t have the ability to think about work.

Luckily, business continued to run like normal. Because we were ahead editorially, there were no breaks in production from the team to continue to publish blog posts, podcast episodes, and episodes of SPI TV, which I was thankful for. And, as you’ll see in the income report below, there were no obvious hits as a result of taking time off to get better.

With that said, as soon as I felt better, my son got the stomach flu, which he probably picked up from school. There was an email sent from the school that a bug was going around, and he seemed to want to join the party. Hooray. He had symptoms that were very similar to mine after that, and much of my time was dedicated to making him feel better and trying to cheer him up.

Seeing your kids sick is the worst.

That is until you get sick because of them, and then both of you are sick!

Yup. After finally feeling like I was recovering, I ended up getting the stomach flu my son had, and went through the same process I went through weeks prior with the food poisoning. It was the worst of luck, and I felt bad because my wife April was working overtime to take care of both of us. Then, my daughter contracted it, and finally, of course, my wife. We were all sick!

Now that we’re in December, at least the kids are back to 100 percent and in school again. My wife and I have had lingering coughs, but I’m finally putting weight back on and getting back into my normal workout routines again.

Getting sick is no joke. It can totally throw things off. And this experience just showed me that even though I did everything I could to take care of myself, it just took one experience with a mishandled or undercooked steak to break the seams and wreak havoc on my plans. Perhaps I would have still contracted the stomach flu, but I feel like I could have potentially fought it off if my immune system wasn’t so defeated from food poisoning.

But then again, because of passive income and the nature of investing time upfront for businesses that can run themselves for period of time, I’m super thankful I was able to keep things afloat.

The 100 Email Challenge!

There was one business-related item I wanted to discuss before we get into the numbers. I was able to fit this in before everything went downhill in November healthwise. It’s the 100 Email Challenge!

The 100 email challenge is a 72-hour challenge I put together to encourage people to start growing their email list. Inspired by Bryan Harris from Videofruit.com, and hosted in conjunction with ConvertKit, I was able to encourage 9,884 people to participate in the challenge!

Why a challenge though?

Challenges are important for getting people to take action. It’s one thing to share information that’s helpful to people, but it’s a whole new ballgame when you give them a timeframe to do it in.

In Session #205 of the SPI Podcast, Jadah Sellner of SimpleGreenSmoothies.com used challenges as the number one strategy to grow her email list and Instagram following to over 200,000 people! She and her partner, Jennifer, conducted a thirty-day challenge where they sent challengers recipes for thirty days straight. Inspired by this, I thought it would be fun to conduct a similar challenge related to starting and growing an email list.

Why 100 emails?

I could have picked any number for the goal of this challenge, but 100 is optimal for a few reasons.

First, it segments the challenge specifically for beginners. Knowing that it’s for people just starting out, it’s much easier for me to tailor the information and share it using language that all of the participants can understand and use.

If, for example, I was challenging people to double the size of their email list, instructions for doing so are going to be a bit different for someone going from 100 to 200, versus someone going from 5,000 to 10,000, or 50,000 to 100,000.

If you’re going to run a challenge, know exactly who it’s for, and stick with it.

Also, because I’ve been segmenting my list for a couple of years now based on the level of business experience people have, it was really easy to make sure I didn’t put this challenge in front of people on my list who’ve already started an email list.

Second, 100 emails seems achievable. It’s not too much where one might say to themselves, “Well that’s going to be impossible! I’ll pass.” But it’s also not so little that it wouldn’t seem useful to have an email list of that size.

In fact, one of the first emails I send out after people subscribe to the challenge is about how useful a list of 100 people can be. Imagine a room full of 100 people that you’re speaking to. That’s what it’s like to have a list of 100 people, because remember: every one subscriber is a real human being on the other end who has expressed interest in learning more about what you’re sharing.

And third, it’s a quick win. It doesn’t take that long to get to 100 subscribers (if the work is put in). Some participants of the 100 Email Challenge met that goal on the first day, which was awesome! Quick wins are huge because they show the participants that what you’re teaching them is working.

So, if this challenge stuff sounds like something you’re likely to run with your audience, my initial advice would be to make sure you choose a challenge that will give your audience a quick win. In my case, it’s the creation of an email list. In Jadah’s case, it’s the ease of creating green smoothies and proving that, even on day one, that they taste amazing and you’ll feel great!

Now, I know you may have some questions about how all of this works. Don’t worry, I got your back. I’ll be creating a comprehensive guide for you so you can run your own challenges. Step by step, every tool and detail along the way so you can literally just go down the checklist.

That will take me a good amount of time to produce, but for now I’ll give you the basic rundown.

The Challenge—How it Worked

The challenge was, on a technical level, relatively easy to setup. There are likely hundreds of ways to run challenges, but I wanted to keep it super simple for people (and myself). So it was all done via email in my email service provider, ConvertKit.

You can run these kinds of challenges using any email service provider that allows you to use autoresponders and send broadcasts. But I prefer ConvertKit for this. What I love about ConvertKit (and the reason why I switched to them from Aweber and Infusionsoft) is the ease of tagging and segmentation. It was super simple for me to tag people as they subscribed, and never send them an email again asking them to join the challenge as I was continually promoting the event leading up to it.

A week before the challenge was set to begin, I started to promote the free challenge by sharing a LeadPage that asked for a name and email address. This collected email addresses into a specific sequence in ConvertKit that delivered the how-to content over the course of three days.

You can actually see a version of this at 100emails.com, which has since been converted to an evergreen challenge page. So, if you wish you could have taken the 72-hour email challenge but didn’t have the time, you can now take it at anytime!

Now, how did this landing page convert? With 5,844 visits, it converted 2,568 people, or 43.94 percent of visitors, which is fantastic!

screenshot-2016-12-09-23-18-01

The thank you page has a number much higher because the rest of the challengers (remember, I said there were nearly ten thousand participants) came from those who were already on my email list. I one-click subscribed them to the challenge, by-passing the leadpage, but they still landed on the thank you page. This is another fun tactic that’s easy to implement using LeadPages and ConvertKit.

Getting the word out there was half the battle. Delivering the content in the emails and keeping people motivated through it was the other half. The best decision I made was to create a private Facebook Group that participants could access to share their journey with each other.

Not all of the participants joined, but it became an amazing community of now over 2,230 members who have been sharing their wins, struggles, and honestly helping each other out more than I could have ever imagined!

And the results?

Well, when you get hundreds of emails from people thanking you for setting up a challenge to finally light a fire underneath them and get them moving, you know it’s a win!

Some people went gangbusters on the strategy and found their first 100 email subscribers in a single day:

screenshot-2016-12-09-23-27-37

For others, it took the entire 72 hours to cross the threshold. And, as with most challenges like this, not everyone will meet the set goal, but will still be encouraged by the process. It’s about finally starting to take action because of the challenge and time constraint, and finally see some results and showing that the hard work pays off.

Check out these messages I received on Facebook:

screenshot-2016-12-09-23-31-04

screenshot-2016-12-09-23-30-19

There are hundreds of messages like these, and more and more are coming in each day as new people are taking the challenge at 100emails.com.

And that’s the cool part. After the challenge is over, you can update the copy on the landing page and thank you page, re-do some of the email copy, and boom—since it’s in an autoresponder series, it’s evergreen! So long as the content you share stays up to date, of course.

So, if you’d like to join the challenge yourself, or at least see how it’s run to give you an idea of how to put one together yourself, just head on over to 100emails.com and start there. Like I said earlier, I’ll be creating a more in-depth tutorial post for you (similar to podcastingtutorial.com) to help you put together a challenge of your own!

I’ll finish off this report by sharing the personal benefit of running this challenge, but before that, let’s dig into the numbers for November 2016.

Full Disclosure: Some of the items in the list below are affiliate links, which means that if you choose to make a purchase through that link, I will earn a commission. This commission comes at no additional cost to you. Please understand that I have experience with all of these companies, and I recommend them because they are helpful and useful, not because of the small commissions I make if you decide to buy something. Please do not spend any money on these products unless you feel you need them or that they will help you achieve your goals.

Note: Items with an empty difference percentage were not present on the previous month’s income report.

Lessons Learned in November

Although I was sick and feeling like I was just trying to survive most of November, I still felt it was a very successful month. The big win was that I experimented with a new strategy on SPI, a challenge, and it was so successful I’ll definitely be doing more like it in 2017. It was a great way to get people to take action, but it also helped my own brand a lot as well.

I think it was Noah Kagan in Session #71 of the SPI Podcast who said that if you can be the person who facilitates community movement in some way it will elevate your brand authority like crazy. This email challenge wasn’t centered around me or the Smart Passive Income brand at all, but because SPI was hosting the challenge, participants can’t help but make the association between their growing email list and the SPI brand.

Now, you might be asking how this may help me monetarily, especially considering that this was a free challenge.

On one level, I’m always playing the long-term game. Serve first and give value, and over time that will always pay you back in some way. Someone who participated in this challenge at the start may purchase my book or an online course someday in the future. Maybe they would have been on the fence, but because of the experience with the challenge they would be more likely to say yes and transact with me because I’ve already provided value to them.

On another level, you may remember that I mentioned that I ran this challenge in conjunction with ConvertKit, the email service provider that I use and work with as an advisor. I was able to incorporate a ConvertKit promotion into this challenge without being overly aggressive, or taking away from its true purpose.

ConvertKit and I set it up so that, for anyone who participated in the challenge, if they were not yet setup with an email service provider, they could take advantage of a 30-day free trial with Convertkit during the challenge to begin housing their email list. This was a win for everyone involved. It allowed challengers to try an email service provider without paying any money upfront, and it helped ConvertKit as well because if participants succeeded and grew their list, they were likely to stay with the service they were already using and ConvertKit would have a new happy customer! And, because I was sharing my affiliate link along the way, I pick up a commission on each person who stays through the trial period.

As I write this, it has yet to be thirty days since the challenge finished, so I can’t tell you exactly how many people stuck with ConvertKit, but the last time I presented an offer like this on a webinar, we had a 70-75 percent stick rate, which is great! Not everyone takes the offer, obviously, but it did give those a chance to use it freely to give it a try, and I expect those who did grow their list will definitely stay on, so a win for everyone!

The big lesson this month was just how powerful and impactful a challenge like this can be for not only helping people (which should always be the first and most important part of the mission), but also helping grow my income, and supporting a company that I love.

I look forward to sharing that challenge post with you sometime in 2017. Woot! Until then, keep up the great work and let’s finish off the year strong!

Cheers!

The Top Challenges Faced by Women in Business in 2018 (Infographic)

From entertainment to tech, women continue to face gender-based challenges in nearly every industry -- and entrepreneurship is no different.

In a survey of more than 3,000 men and women entrepreneurs worldwide, 99designs uncovered the surprising number of challenges women entrepreneurs face in business compared to their male counterparts, with everything from raising capital to hiring employees.

Related: 4 Things Women Entrepreneurs Need to Know Before Approaching Angel Investors and VCs

According to the research, surveyed male entrepreneurs were twice as likely to raise $100,000 or more of outside funding for their startups than female entrepreneurs. Unfortunately, these numbers stayed pretty consistent when this survey was conducted last year. When women can’t get enough funding to launch their businesses, it affects nearly every aspect of their startups, including hiring employees, renting office space and setting reasonable work hours.

Related: These Female Entrepreneurs Created a Fake Male Co-Founder to Work Around Sexism. How Well It Worked Is Incredibly Eye Opening.

Whether it’s due to a lack of funding or lack of employees, women entrepreneurs (68 percent) are more likely than male entrepreneurs (48 percent) to run businesses out of their homes. They are also more likely to register as sole proprietorships than men (49 percent of women vs. 31 percent of men).

In the study, the number of women and men starting businesses in various industries was for the most part equal, with the same number of women and men entrepreneurs going into areas such as business consulting, marketing and PR, retail and media and entertainment. The majority of surveyed men and women also agreed that not asking for help, getting out of their comfort zones and feeling guilt for working too often were some of the top challenges of starting a business.

However, despite these commonalities, women are still discriminated against and gender inequality continues to persist in 2018. To learn more about women in business this year, check out the infographic below.

Your Human Virtual Assistant Will Soon Be an AI-Driven Digital Assistant

[ad_1]

Good help is hard to find, but artificial intelligence is making it easy to build your own dream team.

6 min read

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

A common problem for any scaling business is bringing on the right help at the right time. Small-business owners often find that the people they can afford don't have the skills or experience to do the job well, and the people they want cost too much relative to the business's current cash flow.

Most of the work is labor intensive, repetitive, boring and must be done correctly. As luck would have it, that's exactly the kind of tasks we build computers to do.

Related: 10 Things to Outsource to a Virtual Assistant

Outsourcing 1.0: The past

In the past 15 or so years, outsourcing to international assistants and part-time workers has been the go-to solution for entrepreneurs looking to grow on a budget. Famous successes from this way of thinking include Tim Ferriss's The 4-Hour Work Week and websites like elance.com (which is now Upwork.com). Still, finding the right work to assign to the right assistant in India or the Philippines required a learning curve that was sometimes expensive and time-consuming.

Thanks to growing progress in AI systems, much of this is beginning to change. The next wave of outsourcing is not to virtual assistants, but to digital ones.

Outsourcing 2.0: The present

There are a number of administrative jobs that are being increasingly handled by machines. Just a few early examples of software replacing business functions are X.ai (scheduling/calendaring), Grammarly (proofreading), Conversica (automated email) and LawGeex (contract review). Companies like IBM and Cisco are beginning to tackle customer service, and startups like mine, Cyrano.ai, are looking to manage the entire sales process (even the negotiation).

Related: What Successful Entrepreneurs Outsource to a Virtual Assistant

Right now it's best to think of each system as a standalone assistant that is unable to communicate with other assistants (this is called Artificial Narrow Intelligence). You tell the scheduling robot your work hours, you tell the proofreading robot what to read, you assign homework to your robotic paralegal, etc. Each will carry out the assigned tasks and report back to you, the quarterback who manages all these systems and executes based on all their efforts and insights.

When incorporating all this into your life or business, it's best to add these technologies one at a time and learn how to use them before adding subsequent systems. The learning curve gets flatter as you become accustomed to trusting these robots and learning what does and doesn't work. As you get a feel for how they work, you adjust. The fact that you have to adapt to them, and they don't invisibly work together, are two of the growing pains of this stage of development and a commentary on what is currently state-of-the-art.

Ultimately, all these distinct tools will get stacked together into a single system and become expected commodities the same way all the features you take for granted on a cellphone were added over time. One year later, you will wonder how you ever got along without them.

Related: 6 Mistakes Smart People Make When Hiring a Virtual Assistant

Outsourcing 3.0: The future

Ultimately, we want a single system that can do all these things and more (which is a big step toward, but still not, Artificial General Intelligence). An important part of a truly great digital assistant isn't just its ability to handle all these tasks in one system; it will need to understand your priorities and work well with you. For this to work at all (and for sales and customer service to get better), AI assistants need to have better emotional intelligence than they currently have. The nuance of how and when things are communicated must be measured and calculated, which may or may not necessitate follow-up questions from the assistant.

What if we could assign specific personality to our digital assistants? This has been shown in movies like Interstellar, Her and Iron Man to make our commands and requests more conversational and fluid. The existing batch of Siri, Alexa and Cortana have names and little touches of humanity programmed in, but what will it be like when you can make adjustments to your own assistant? This isn't just about assigning a new name as the "wake word" that turns it on or picking an accent -- this is about adjusting communication style to optimize efficiency and satisfaction. Big picture vs. detail-oriented. Bottom line vs. relationship-driven. As these kinds of things get quantified through natural language understanding, the digital assistants of the future will be optimized for personality. That means they can learn how to best work with you rather than you learning how each of the systems currently work.

As this happens, a growing company won't merely outsource what have been traditionally entry-level jobs; it means the right technology could increasingly handle important aspects of the business. Imagine how many great companies have failed because they couldn't get the right talent in a critical department. Imagine a world where these problems are fading away.

Related: My Virtual Assistant Tried to Steal From Me. Here's What You Should Know.

Why this is coming sooner than you think

Imagine starting a business with the knowledge that your administrative, sales, legal and customer service departments were all built into your Microsoft Office subscription, or part of your Google startup scholarship. How connected to that ecosystem would your business be? Google, MIcrosoft, Apple, IBM and Salesforce are just a few of the companies spending a combined billions of dollars on making this a reality because they know Outsourcing 3.0 is a market that can probably be cornered. Building, buying and integrating the different individual systems that need to work together to build the ultimate digital assistant will take time.

Microsoft currently owns most enterprise contracts today due to legacy. It has an impressive economic moat around this space, large enough that failing to gain traction in mobile could be absorbed. Whoever wins this next arms race will save companies of all sizes so much money it will offer a compelling reason for any company to switch to a new ecosystem and suite of services. "Virtual assistant as a service" is coming, and it's (eventually) going to be awesome.

What Are Vision and Mission Statements and Why Having Them Is Essential

[ad_1]

In business, just as in life, it’s important to have an understanding of who you are, where you’re going, what you want to achieve, and why you want to get there. You need to have goals, and those goals need to serve an overarching purpose. But, to get there, it takes effort.

That’s why having a solid vision and mission statement for your business (and yourself!) is important. Let’s quickly define what those are:

  • Vision Statement: A Vision Statement is about the future. It defines the ideal future state for you/your business. It’s about what you are striving for and how you envision yourself once you complete your mission.

  • Mission Statement: A Mission Statement defines what you or your business are about in the present. It is action-oriented, determining what your business does, who it serves, and how it does what it does. It is the action you take now to fulfill your vision.

I like Warby Parker’s mission statement, which speaks to their culture and philanthropic aim:

“Warby Parker was founded with a rebellious spirit and a lofty objective: to offer designer eyewear at a revolutionary price, while leading the way for socially conscious businesses.”

And a good (and out of this world!) example of a mission-vision statement combination would be from one of my favorite companies, SpaceX:

“SpaceX designs, manufactures, and launches advanced rockets and spacecraft. The company was founded in 2002 to revolutionize space technology, with the ultimate goal of enabling people to live on other planets.”

To live on other planets. Now that’s just awesome. Sign me up for Mars!

Now, when it comes to me and Smart Passive Income, the truth is that I’ve never specifically set out to create what some might call a vision or mission statement. But that’s not to say I don’t have one. Take a look at my homepage on SmartPassiveIncome.com, for example. It says that I’m “the crash test dummy of online business.” And, below that, “My experiments will show you how to build an ethical business fueled by passive income.”

These ideas have been with me from the very start of SPI. They mean the world to me, and are at the core of who I am and what SPI is all about. Sound like a mission statement? Because it is!

So, with that said, the mission statement for Smart Passive Income is this:

To teach others how to build an ethical and smart business fueled by passive income.

From the beginning, I wanted to serve my audience first, and lead by example, providing fellow entrepreneurs with the opportunity to learn from my personal experience—both the ups and downs—to help inform their own journeys. That has been the mission of SPI all along.

As for the vision statement, this is a work in progress.

That is really what this blog post is about. It’s to help us (me included!) think more critically about our vision and mission statements for ourselves and for the businesses we run. What is at your core? And how does that inform your vision for yourself and your company? These are the questions we should be asking ourselves.

Let’s start here:

Have you created a mission statement for yourself, for your business? Have the goals you created helped you progress toward fulfilling your ultimate vision?

In Will It Fly?, to help future business owners like yourself, I created what I called the Airport Test, which is a thought experiment to get you to think about your personal vision. In it, the reader is faced with a hypothetical scenario:

Imagine that you are five years in future, and you run into friend you haven’t seen in awhile. This friend asks how you are doing and you respond by saying that you are “amazing, life couldn’t be any better.”

I then ask: “What’s happening to you in five years that makes you respond that way?”

The test is designed to inspire you to start thinking about your future, and the components that can lead you to a successful future in business.

So, how would you answer that question?

To help inspire some thought, here are a few responses I received from readers who went through the Airport Test exercise:

If you do the paper airplane exercise (The Airport Test), you will really see what’s really important to you and you can make sure that you never do anything that takes you off of your path! – Jeff

My favorite section, so far, is the airport test which has already been helpful with important life decisions. I no longer feel guilty standing my ground because I know what I truly want. – Jessica

The best part of the book so far has been the Airport Test, I have it with me and review it daily since I don’t think I need to wait 5 years to START living many of those statements, it just means giving myself permission to do so. – Denise

Now it’s your turn. How would you answer that hypothetical question? Where will you be in five years?

If you’ve run through this Airport Test, I’d love to hear from you in the comments how it went and if you gained any new insight from it!

Why Having a Vision and Mission Statement is Essential

A Vision Statement is the place you want to be, the place you’re striving for. A Mission Statement defines who you are, what your goals are, what you’re doing now. To me, it’s essential to have both.

But it’s also important to recognize that there is room for flexibility. Life changes, goals change, circumstances change, so it makes sense that your vision and mission statements could potentially change—completely or revised—as well. So be open to that. That’s okay!

As I mentioned before, my Vision Statement is still a work in progress, but I will share it here for you:

To own the entire package. Having control of that, and through leading by example, showing others how to do the same. By owning the entire package, I mean being able to grow and scale several businesses that have a direct major impact on the lives of others, staying present with my family, especially my kids, and being able to teach them, and other children in this world, about adopting an entrepreneurial mindset to help them through living happier lives, with more impact.

I will continue to hone my Vision Statement, but this is what it is today. I think, once I nail it down, I will write another blog post about it. Sound good? Onward and upward!

The key thing I’ll leave you with is this:

You don’t need to have your vision and mission statements right now, but you should be working on them. Why? Because we can learn as many strategies as we want, we can build businesses that make money, but unless we know what those foundational elements are—the vision and mission statements—we’re just going to be heading down a direction that we ultimately don’t want to be. It might be fun at the time that we’re building it, but if we don’t consider foundation up front, you might look back and say, “Wow, I did all of these things that actually didn’t help me get to where I want to go.”

Remember also to make sure your goals are within the realm of possibility. I’m not saying you shouldn’t dream. Dreamers are folks like my hero, Elon Musk. You should dream, but you should also understand your strengths and limitations. Each year is a blank slate, a fresh start, so don’t feel defeated. You can do whatever you put your mind to. I believe in you.

Finally, before I go, in this week’s episode of the Smart Passive Income Podcast, I sit down with Michael Hyatt to discuss creating a “Life Vision Plan.” Michael is the master when it comes to goal-setting and achieving, so I highly recommend you check out that episode when it drops on Wednesday.

And if you took part in the Airport Test, and you feel up for it, please take a moment to post your personal/business mission statement in the comments section below! I know we’d all love to see them, and be inspired by them.

Thank you, and I appreciate you!

Fake News Spreads Faster on Twitter Than Real News, Study Says

[ad_1]

Don't blame bots. People share fake news over Twitter because they find the content novel, according to the MIT study.

3 min read

Brought to you by PCMag

Falsehoods spread faster on Twitter than real news, and the problem can't be blamed on bots, a new study finds.

Fake news tends to have the real news beat in one area: novelty. That's why Twitter users can't help but share half-truths and unchecked rumors over the platform, according to a trio of MIT researchers.

The findings appear in the latest issue of Science and underscore an ongoing critique facing Twitter: that the social media service is doing more harm than good by becoming a hotbed for fake news and propaganda. The study delved deeper into the issue by examining how 126,000 stories -- both real and false -- were tweeted by over 3 million people.

"We found that falsehood diffused significantly farther, faster, deeper and more broadly than the truth in all categories of information," the authors wrote.

For instance, the true news-related tweets rarely reached over 1,000 people. In contrast, the top 1 percent of tweets carrying false news routinely spread from between 1,000 to 100,000 people. Fake political news was especially viral; it reached over 20,000 people faster than what other false news categories could do.

"When we estimated a model of the likelihood of retweeting, we found that falsehoods were 70 percent more likely to be retweeted than the truth," the authors added.

Did follower counts have anything to do with the results? Not really. The people who shared the false news stories generally had fewer followers than people who tweeted fact-based stories, the study said. Fake news sharers were also less active on Twitter, usually weren't verified, and hadn't been on the platform for long.

To account for bots, the MIT team used a computer algorithm to strip out suspected fake accounts from their research data. But even without the algorithm, their overall findings remained the same.

"We conclude that human behavior contributes more to the differential spread of falsity and truth than automated robots do," they said. This suggests that to fight misinformation, Twitter will have to do more than simply crack down on bots, the authors added.

The study doesn't exactly paint the social media service in the best light. But Twitter actually supported the researchers by providing funding and access to the archived tweets. CEO Jack Dorsey tweeted his support for the study, following his own public efforts to clean up the service. "Important findings within that [research] will help improve our work," he said.

Among those projects is an effort to measure the health of conversations across the platform. The company has also been notifying users who interacted with Russian propaganda on Twitter during the 2016 presidential election.

6 Qualities of Greatness

[ad_1]

When we strive for greatness, 'success' is the secondary benefit.

A Note From The Editor

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

We all have the potential for greatness. To develop and express our greatness, we must possess the passion and drive to live our lives with calculated risks and an attitude of faith. When we strive for greatness, when we strive to give all we’ve got to achieving our dreams, "success" is the secondary benefit.

Related: Develop These 7 Habits to Unlock Your Greatness

Greatness lies in the journey, not the result. If success is our only drive, we may achieve financial wealth, but we may not achieve greatness. Greatness is much deeper than money. Greatness is an expression of our character.

1. Leadership

Greatness in leaders is expressed though a positive attitude. For this reason, we must add a positive attitude to everything we do. When we do this, it causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events and outcomes to come our way. Our positive attitude must be powerful enough to infect every one of our team members. It is our attitude that motivates our team members to achieve the goals that have been placed in front of them.

How we respond to our team members when the stakes are high and the consequences really matter is what helps them to be fearless. As leaders, we must lay the groundwork for our team members to succeed, and then we must possess the humility and self-confidence to sit back and watch them shine. A leader who possesses greatness will take more than his or her fair share of the blame when things go wrong and be satisfied to take less than a fair share of the acknowledgment when success occurs.

Related: The 5 Mental Barriers to Greatness Only You Can Remove

2. Service

To be of real service in this world, we must add something to other people's lives that cannot be bought. To be great, we must always give everything, and everyone we care about, our energy, drawing on the highest levels of sincerity, honesty and integrity.

We must be willing to invest our time and our hearts into whatever it is we represent. When we make good on what we do and see ourselves making a significant difference in the lives of others, we can be sure we’re investing our efforts in all the right ways and all the right things. We each have greatness in us and the potential to give something unique and special to to this world. When we blend our individual talents with the desire to serve others, we experience a beauty in life that exalts our spirit.

3. Results

Getting the results we desire comes from how hard we work and how optimistic our outlook is. Greatness is developed out of the understanding that our time in this world is limited, so we must be mindful not to waste any of our time trying to live someone else’s life.

We have to combine our passion and persistence to follow our own dreams. We must strongly resist being trapped by limiting beliefs that come from the naysayers in our lives. We have to have the courage to follow our gut instinct, to put all of who we are into what we want to achieve and consistently produce the results we’re looking for. Big results require big desires. To be great, we must allow the desire for the results we seek to spark what is extraordinary from within us.

4. Efficiency

Greatness is never a one-person job. Greatness is the ability we each have to drive effective, consistent and empathic communication. The meetings we hold must be deliberate and intentional. They should be organized, have rhythm and be clear about the purpose at hand so that all of our team members feel included and engaged throughout the process.

There is no path to profitability without effective and efficient communication. Profitability comes from productivity, efficiency, management, strictness and the way we manage our time and business. If we choose to make a meaningful contribution in this world, we must value our time, the time of others and the energy it takes to get to where we want to go. We cannot afford to allow poor communication and resentments to get in the way of our being efficient and profitable.

5. Quality

To possess greatness, we must care deeply about the quality of service we offer. Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of conscious effort. By putting out quality services and products, we increase our quality of life, our capacity to believe in ourselves and our levels of happiness.

The quality work we produce allows us to feel proud of who we are, what we do and how we impact the lives of other people. When we produce high-quality services or products, we live with the gift of having peace of mind. Quality decreases stress. For this reason, we must choose high-quality thoughts, emotions and actions to ensure that our greatness is expressed, recognized and appreciated.

6. Reliability

Greatness is reflected in the reliability of who we are as people and the services and products we offer. We must have some level of predictability in our character and in what it is that we sell or produce. If we can predict things, we have the ability to intervene when necessary to make sure that what we produce is exactly what we promised.

Related: Greatness Begins With Understanding the Basics of Business

To be great, we must value the self-discipline and systems that make it impossible for things to go wrong. The more reliable we are, the more others will be willing to trust and depend on us to provide the quality service they are anticipating. We must be intentional about being on time, as well as confident, intelligent and calm. When we possess these qualities, we possess greatness.

This Successful Media Executive Shares a Surprising Truth About What You Must Do to Secure Your Place at the Top

[ad_1]

Dawn Ostroff, the former president of the CW and president of Condé Nast Entertainment, says you must always be ready to embrace change.

In this series, Open Every Door, Entrepreneur staff writer Nina Zipkin shares her conversations with leaders about understanding what you have to offer, navigating the obstacles that will block your path, identifying opportunity and creating it for yourself and for others.

Dawn Ostroff has experience giving consumers what they want, even before they know they want it. As the president of the CW, her M.O. was to give the new network a reputation for being a home to zeitgeist-defining series, helping to develop beloved hits including Gossip Girl, Vampire Diaries, Veronica Mars and America's Next Top Model.

Ostroff started out as reporter for several network affiliates in Miami before heading to Lifetime, where as head of programming she helped make the network the number one cable channel in the country. From there she served as the president of UPN, and then with the merger of UPN and the WB, lead the CW. In 2011, Ostroff left the CW to pursue her next opportunity: to build a new brand as president of Cond? Nast Entertainment (CNE).

Under that umbrella, she has worked to develop content across digital, social media, film, TV and VR and grow a distribution network with nearly 60 partners, 20 digital video channels and about 2,300 websites. The film and TV divisions of CNE currently have 65 active projects in stages of development and production, one film on track to come out in 2018, as well as eight TV series that are ordered or renewed in 2018, and five scripted programs that were picked up for development and one pilot ordered by ABC.

Under Ostroff, CNE has been nominated for an Academy Award and a Peabody Award.

Entrepreneur.com spoke with Ostroff about why you must always be ready to embrace change in order to make a real impact.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Related: The Surest Way to Build Your Confidence Is by Not Fearing Change

Can you tell me about a time you needed to create opportunity for yourself or others?

Launching the CW, knowing that we were going to formulate a new network to target 18- to 34-year-olds. And then of course when I started Conde Nast Entertainment. We really went from just an idea to having a full fledged company where you have hundreds and hundreds of employees. We've been able to create an opportunity for people not only on the traditional media business side but also the people who are young and really changing the way that we watch content. It's been really incredible to be able to build something with people who have a different vision and are changing the industry.

What personal traits or strategies do you rely on to create opportunity for yourself and others?

As a leader it's important to encourage your team to take a few steps back and look at where the world is headed. We're living in a world where things are changing so rapidly, you have to be nimble enough to make a calculated decision to change and also be bold enough to experiment and try new things. If you don't try you just will never know. Sometimes you stumble across things that you never would have expected.

When you experience a setback, what do you do to keep going? How do you get unstuck?

For me it's always about being able to see what was the original goal. What is the game plan? What is the roadmap? Where do we need to get to? It goes back to my mom always saying you just brush yourself off, pick yourself up and start over. When you're doing a startup, it's over and over and over again that you're going to get knocked down. How fast can you say OK, let's try another direction. Let's try this way. Always saying there's got to be a way and really persevering and not giving up.

Related: You Need to Meet Your Challenges With Pathological Optimism at Every Turn

People who want to advocate for themselves don't know always know how. What are actionable steps they can take to make themselves heard? What steps do you take?

If it's an idea that I can bring facts to the table, [I'll look at] either something that is trending, something that's worked somewhere else or a business model that makes sense. I always find that if you present an idea that's based on actual research or fact, it tends to resonate a little bit more because you've done your homework and it also illustrates that there might be an opportunity for your company to explore. Even if it's not a good idea, people respect you for thinking that way. I really encourage people to come forth with their ideas and concepts because that's a whole other skill set set that any management team would really respond to in a favorable way.

Related: Need to Negotiate? Here's the Best Way to Advocate for Yourself for Maximum Impact.

Has there been a counterintuitive or surprising way you've opened doors for yourself?

Speaking to business leaders from different business sectors is always so interesting because you can take things from that conversation and apply them to your business. You're able to hear their challenges or accomplishments or ways that they approach business. It's a company town in L.A., but going outside of that comfort zone is so advantageous because you get to really hear what what's worked elsewhere.

Was there a blindspot that you had about leadership and opportunity you worked to change within yourself?

When there is a business model that really works, you're in a sweet spot where you know that your business is humming and you're sort of sitting back and resting on your laurels. It is really important during this time to look forward and say, what do we need to be doing to protect my growth and my company for the future? The guy below you on that mountain has nothing to lose. That really creates different ways of thinking and groundbreaking concepts that you wouldn't think about. So the big challenge is how do you balance that? How do you balance a place where your company is thriving and successful and really hitting it on all levels while preparing for the future?

Reader Gratitude Challenge: Write One Thank You Note Every Day for 7 Days

https://cdn.smartpassiveincome.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Twin-Cities-Team-Flynn-October-2016-1024x768.jpg [ad_1]

Last week was Thanksgiving here in the United States, and since we’ve been talking a lot about gratitude this month, I thought it would be fun to finish off the month (whether you live in the US or not) by giving you a fun and rewarding challenge (and bonus giveaway)!

Before the challenge starts, I’d first like to tell you a quick story about my executive assistant, Jessica.

You might remember Jessica from Session #115 of The SPI Podcast. In that interview, we talked about how I had hired her to tackle my email inbox, which was approaching a whopping 10,000 unread emails. We developed a system between us that allowed me to finally get a handle on my inbox, and since sharing that system on the podcast, it has helped thousands of SPI listeners get a better grip on the never-ending flooding email inbox problem.

Beyond the emails, she’s been helping me even more lately with a lot of administrative tasks, such as scheduling interviews, booking travel, and helping filter Speakpipe questions for AskPat.  I’ve also discovered she has an amazing ability to find the perfect gift for people.

We’ve gotten to know each other very well recently, and not too long ago she took a well-deserved trip to Europe.

While she was traveling, something pretty cool happened: Every week while she was gone, she sent me a handwritten postcard. The note was short and sweet and had a picture of where she was at at the time. It was so thoughtful and incredible. This kind of expression really really stood out to me as one that takes time and consideration, having went through the trouble of handwriting a note and then sending it off through snail mail.

And, of course, with how easy it is to say thank you on social media or via email these days, having the person on the other end know that you went just a little bit further to thank them goes an extremely long way. It always does for me when someone takes the time to send me a handwritten note.

I was happy I was able to catch up with Jessica in person not too long after she got back from Europe. I was in Minnesota for Converted16, and so we met up for dinner with a few other Team Flynn members. It was really amazing to hear that she does this all of the time for many other people that she knows.

Handwritten notes make others feel special. Whether it’s a thank you note, a birthday greeting, a postcard from the road, or even a Post-It note stuck to their computer monitor, you’re giving them a gift of your time and energy. It’s a really simple way to let others know you love and appreciate them, and that you’re thinking of them when they least expect it. — Jessica at GalFriday612

twin-cities-team-flynn-october-2016

I was truly inspired by Jessica, so I challenged myself to write a handwritten thank you note to a different person for seven days in a row.

And here’s what happened:

Initially, it felt a little weird to do handwriting again. Beyond the occasional signature or checks I write, most of my communication is either done with my voice, or with my keyboard.

Also, it was extremely fun to do! It was different, but more than that, because I knew it was for someone else who had an impact on me in some way, I looked forward to the entire process, from writing the note, sealing the envelope, and shipping it off with postage.

The best part, however, was that because I was handwriting these notes, and because it was taking a little longer than just typing it out, I had more time to reflect on why I was thankful for each of the recipients, and it made me appreciate them even more.

So, here’s my challenge to you:

For seven days in a row, starting today, write a handwritten note to someone you are thankful for. You can write whatever you’d like and choose whoever you’d like to write to. It can be written on anything. Doesn’t matter. You can send it via snail mail, or hand it to them in person. Doesn’t matter. Just do it, and I promise that you’ll feel great, and you may even make someone feel appreciated when they need it most.

Bonus giveaway!

And to celebrate your joy of giving thanks, we will be giving away four (4) sets of notecards! To participate in the giveaway, take a picture of one of your handwritten notes and post it on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #GalFridayNotes. Jessica and I will be choosing our four (4) favorite handwritten notes (two favorites on Instagram and two favorites on Twitter)!

The deadline is 12/5 and we will announce the four winners via Twitter/Instagram on 12/7!

The four lucky winners will receive a set of lovely note cards personally chosen by Jessica (Gal Friday!) herself. You have to use the hashtag #GalFridayNotes to enter into the giveaway, so don’t forget! And, above all, have fun and be thankful. 😀

Robots May Replace Some Jobs, But Your Human Team Members Should Be There to Guide Them

[ad_1]

Here are five ways entrepreneurs can embrace workforce automation alongside its intelligent augmentation.

5 min read

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

The epic rise of artificial intelligence (AI) brings us to a new era of automation that is changing the world of work and employment. Some analysts believe that over the next 20 years, 47 percent of the U.S. jobs will be automated, leaving many tasks obsolete and people unemployed. This change will not be linear, though. While some jobs like driving may be fully automated in the short run, businesses should be prepared for a new mixed economy where robots and AI software work alongside human agents and cooperate with them in executing various tasks.

Related: Artificial Intelligence Is Likely to Make a Career in Finance, Medicine or Law a Lot Less Lucrative

The emerging mixed economy leads us to a concept of augmented AI that focuses on AI's assistive role and emphasizes the fact that it's designed to improve human intelligence rather than replace it. To ensure that your company stays competitive in the machine age, I have compiled a list of five strategies for entrepreneurs to prepare for augmented AI and automation.

Find tasks that can benefit from augmentation and automation.

The first thing businesses should do is to rethink how the tasks can be made faster and more efficient via automation and augmented AI. This requires core processes and tasks be evaluated as a mix of human and machine input that simultaneously leverages the power of human and machine intelligence. Although many things can be automated and augmented with AI, companies should approach this change strategically, aligning automation with corporate culture, employee and consumer relations and the company's mission.

The key emphasis should be put on tasks that can free up the employee's time for more important activities that require essential human skills like creativity. For example, intelligent narratives software or chatbots can replace humans in executing repetitive tasks like compiling reports and arranging the meetings. As such, these AI tools can free up time for problem solving and building strong relations with clients and within teams.

Examine types of nonhuman workforces.

Businesses will need AI and robotics expertise to identify technologies, tools and strategic opportunities flourishing in the dynamic AI market. With internal or external expertise or consultancy, companies can study the entire array of robotics and cognitive and AI technologies to learn what tasks can be automated and how. Getting to know the world of robotics and AI is also critical for finding the companies and tools with the most competitive pricing to meet your budget constraints.

Make employees AI-literate.

Before the automation in your business is underway, your employees will have to learn how to effectively collaborate and configure robots, machines and AI software. For example, if you are running a chatbot application, it's crucial you have employees who can evaluate its performance and step in if something goes wrong. Similarly, many vertical chatbot AI solutions are designed to perform a single task like arranging a meeting, which maintains a strong role for employees in the mediation of communication between AI and consumers.

Also, with the growing humanization of predictive analytics software and various statistical and business intelligence tools, employees will have to grow expertise in data visualization and telling machines which reports and analyses to produce. Eventually, the comprehensive knowledge of human-AI interfaces will become indispensable for the efficient operations of your business.

Focus on the human side of the job.

It's likely that automation will have a different impact on different jobs. The most susceptible to automation are jobs that include predictable manual work, data processing and data collection. Managing others and applying expertise as well as unpredictable physical work (e.g. forestry or construction) and stakeholder interactions are less susceptible to automation. This means that tasks with "essentially human" parts of work are likely to stay in place and become even more important in the new AI era. For these tasks, skill sets like empathy, persuasion, personal service, problem-solving and strategic decision-making are becoming more valuable than ever. To stay competitive in the new AI age, companies should definitely focus on developing these skills in their employees.

Redesign careers and prepare talent.

The role of "essentially human" skills is likely to increase in jobs and tasks that have been traditionally considered technical (e.g. software development or engineering). In the AI-augmented enterprise, a technical skill set is no longer sufficient for managing human-AI interaction efficiently. Therefore, companies are facing the challenge of reframing careers and designing new ways of working and learning, both for organizations and individuals. Companies should emphasize the human component in technical jobs and create a balance of technical skills and more general purpose skills like creativity, social skills and emotional intelligence in their workforce.

These tips comprise the essential process that will help companies prepare for automation and augmented AI. Along with these tips, companies should remember that integrating artificial intelligence in the business is not a straightforward process but a task that requires a lot of planning and thinking outside the box.
