Building a Social Media Empire: Step 1

Over the past few years, one my focuses has been building a social media empire.

I have built a very nice audience of over 3,500,000 followers on Facebook and Twitter. I use that audience to reach 50-100M people a month.

I am able to successfully monetize that audience and generate quite a bit of income as well 🙂

So, I thought it would be interesting to a series of posts explaining how I have built my “social media empire” and start building a brand new audience from scratch to feature in my posts.

My goal is to show you the exact steps I have used to build my audience and how I use that audience to generate an income.

I believe that within 3 months I will have a substantial audience and then within 6 months I will be profitable on this project. I will create and share a spreadsheet showing updated numbers for how much I’ve spent, how much I’ve made, and how much my audience grows week-to-week.

Let’s get started.

Step 1: Find Your Niche

Finding a niche to build your audience and empire around is very important for multiple reasons:

  • You want to pick something you are going to enjoy working on every single day.

  • You want to pick a niche that has a lot of potential for growth.

  • You want to pick a niche that you can eventually make money from.

We’ve also discussed finding a niche in-depth on the FPTraffic blog and that article is well worth a look.

I choose to build my audiences around entertainment niches and specifically I love doing Fan Pages for TV shows. The majority of my social media audience is built around Fan Pages for TV shows and they have been very successful for me.

For example, I created a Fan Page on Facebook for the TV show It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia in 2011 and I have posted on that Facebook Page almost every single day since I launched it. Why? Because of the reasons I mentioned above. I love Always Sunny, I’ve found a ton of opportunity to grow with that audience over the years, and I’ve been able to make a lot of money doing it.

So, find a niche you love and give it a try.

My New Niche: This Is Us

This Is Us is a NBC TV show that I have been watching since it first aired last year. I thought about creating a Fan Page for it right after the first episode, but decided to wait to see if it would rise in popularity and get renewed for a few more seasons. It did and now it’s time to take action!

I won’t bore you with all the details of the show, but I highly recommend you check it out. They already have a big social media presence, but I think there’s opportunity for me to come in and capture the audience’s attention from a more fan driven aspect.

I decided to call my Fan Page and Twitter account Everything TIU (Everything This Is Us).

Facebook Page

I am not going to go into a lot of detail on how to create your Facebook Page because there’s already a ton of content out there on how to do that, but feel free to check out our “create a Facebook Page guide” from the FPTraffic blog.

I recommend finding a username that is available on Facebook, Twitter, and the domain as a .com. I use a tool called Launchaco to do this.

Find your username and then register the domain. You can then setup a forwarding email address on your new domain to use to create your Twitter. I register my domains through Name.com and it’s really easy to setup an email forward. You can literally have it setup in a matter of minutes.

Okay, now I’ve bought my domain, created my Facebook Page, and setup my Twitter account.

You’ll notice I used the same profile picture and cover for both the Facebook Page and Twitter. I like to have cohesion across the channels I use for my social media marketing so people will easily recognize that they are connected.

Now that my accounts are both created and setup, I’m ready to start posting. I will start finding and scheduling content to post to my accounts. Once I have a little content published, I will begin advertising using Facebook Ads for Likes to grow my Page and work on growing the Twitter.

But, that’s coming in my next post!

Feel free to follow the accounts to see what I’m doing. Let me know if you have any questions in the comments below.

Let’s make some money!
